“No.”

Ethan was honest.

“I have a good life. You were burning out from the child cases. I knew why you left. I never hated you. I found Elizabeth right after, again, thanks to Timothy.”

“Thank you for that.”

Ethan was honest.

“Now, we focus on giving you what you need so you find someone who understands you, Gene. I know the perfect Cupid to make that happen.”

“What?”

“Elizabeth has an uncanny knack for matching people up. Let her find you a man.”

He actually laughed, and it was warm and so damn familiar.

“So let my ex’s wife hook me up with a man? How could that go horribly wrong?” he asked, making Ethan laugh along with him.

“Seriously. Let her find you someone.”

“So are you saying that I should leave Tommy behind?” he asked. “I trust you. If you say walk, Ethan, I’m going to. If you say stay and fight, I will.”

Oh, boy.

“No, I don’t think you should stay. He’s going to get himself killed, and you’ll die with him,” he admitted. “You’ll not make it through it.”

Gene had to make sure.

“Can I save him?”

“No. Tommy is out to prove something, and when people do that, they don’t listen to logic. On top of that, he doesn’t trust you, and when you’re married, you have to have absolute trust. I knew when he questioned me about us. Do you want to spend the rest of your life being accused of cheating?”

He didn’t hesitate.

“No, but I do love him. I know I have to, right?”

Ethan knew the test.

“If I said to you right now that we should go to a motel, get naked, and let me tie you up…would you get on your knees for me like you always used to and let me fuck you behind Tommy’s back?”

Jesus.

His body reacted.

There was that ripple of need as he thought about the long, amazing sex life they had together before he left.

Yeah, he’d cheat in a heartbeat, and that told him everything.

“You know the answer to that. You’re my kryptonite, and you always will be, Ethan. Always.”

He was aware.

“Let that be your gauge. That should tell you all you need to know about your relationship.”

Yeah, he was right.

But of course, he was.
