Elizabeth was ready, and now, she, Ivan, and Tommy were in another blacked-out ride heading toward the police station to take care of business.
They’d just left the private parking lot at The Hunter’s office, and she knew what was coming was likely going to be a mess.
New Orleans was on the cusp.
Not that it wasn’t always, but today, it felt a little more dire.
This had the possibility of blowing up and causing one hell of a mess.
What she did know was that they had to get it in control before that happened.
Axelle would lose her shit.
The president too.
The other thing that was spiraling out of control was the man beside her. He’d insisted on helping, and that she didn’t mind. It allowed her to keep an eye on him.
Thomas Bernard was a good cop, but he had a few issues.
Mainly, he wasn’t meant to be a Hunter.
He was too lily-white and pure.
That was a bad mix when you had no choice but to do the dirtiest of deeds in a city that ran with blood, sex, and murder.
On the outside, New Orleans was a tourist dream, but underneath it, there was something darker, older, and more animalistic.
It was a place where nothing was as it seemed, and nothing was truer than that.
Sometimes, people got in over their heads.
Like Thomas Bernard.
It was clear this man was honest to his core, and he only wanted to be a good cop.
A killer he wasn’t.
Which was a problem when you dropped him into a gaggle of mercenaries.
Or was that a murder of mercenaries?
Either way, he didn’t belong, and this was a while coming. What was also coming was an explosion in his personal life if it hadn’t already happened.
“So,” she said. “How are things?”
He barely answered.
“Great,” he finally offered, lying his ass off. The last thing he wanted to think about was Gene off with his ex.
It rubbed him the wrong way.
Just from the tone of his voice, Elizabeth knew that was anything but the damn truth.
That was crystal clear.
Well, two could play at that game.
“That’s good,” she said. “Why did you want to join me at the police station?”
