It was difficult to keep his body in check because he was rock-hard.

When she turned, she smiled at him.

“Welcome to my inner sanctum,” she said, typing in the numbers.

He stared at her fingers as they moved over the keypad.

“That’s a date.”

She stared at him.

“Yeah, my birthday.”

His heart raced.

It was also his birthday.

“What?” she asked.

“Is it really your birthday?” he asked. “Or are you playing with me?”

She laughed.

“Why would I lie about my birthday. Oh, God. It’s not your wife’s or daughter’s is it?”

He shook his head.

“It’s mine, but a different year. I’m twenty years older than you.”

She placed her hand on his arm and when she did, he actually flinched.

He stopped her.

“Calyx…I can’t.”

She understood. He wasn’t ready, and she wouldn’t force him.

“Relax, Mr. Bowman. It’s intel. I promise I’m not going to molest you. I’m just sorry that I didn’t know that we share a birthday. I’ll get a cake for us when it rolls around again.”

That touched him.

And heated him up.

Was that the sign?

God.

He wished he could figure this all out.

Because Remington trusted Calyx, he entered the office behind her, and it didn’t look anything like the woman he’d learned so much about.

It was masculine, there was a leather couch, and the desk was daunting.

Going to the safe, she punched in the numbers.

“Also our birthday, but with my year,” she said. “You know, in case you feel the need to safe crack.”

He laughed.
