His protection was gone.

Finally, she spoke when she was able to form the words.

“Yes, we’re even. You’re a handsome man, Remington. Thank you for that gift. Only, I feel like I need to give you something in return.”

He lifted a brow in suspicion.

“What?”

She moved back toward the safe and pulled out a file folder. Calyx had been in possession of it for a while debating on when to give it to him. Now seemed like a good time since she wanted him to know it existed.

She wasn’t sure he knew.

“I’m going to give you this,” she said and then explained. “I bought it off of the dark web. Someone on there had pictures of you and your family,” she said.

At her words, he reacted the way she assumed.

His body tensed.

Remington knew exactly what pictures she meant. He’d been trying to get them for a very long time.

To no avail.

Calyx felt the chill emanating from him.

Did he think she was going to use them for money or to force him into sex?

That broke her heart.

That was furthest from the truth.

Calyx explained.

“When I saw them for sale, I didn’t want anyone to have them. I wanted to protect you. They’re the only copies, and the man who sold them to me…”

He waited.

“He’s no longer alive. It was a tragic incident. Alcohol and a gun. They don’t mix.”

He couldn’t believe it.

She saved him?

She saved the pictures of his wife and child from being fodder for all of the seedy underbelly?

Immediately, his heart was thumping in his chest.

“You bought them?”

“Yes, but there’s something else you need to know. You need to know how he got them. As I was making him bleed for his…transgression, he spilled his guts.”

He waited.

“Remmy, he was instructed to sell them to anyone but you. He was paid not to release them to you. Every time you offered him money, he was given more to tell you no to torture you. This person wanted you to suffer.”

He blinked.

“Who?” he asked, already suspecting.
