He could barely hear her words over the staccato in his ears.

“That’s not going to cover it. You know what I want, Remmy,” she said.

His body went tense.

God.

Please not that.

“I want a simple kiss.”

Oh, well, that was a huge-ass problem for him, and for one reason alone.

He shook his head.

“I’m sorry, Calyx. If I touch you, I’m not leaving here without sex. I’m doing this for you.”

“Are you?” she asked.

He nodded.

“Trust me. You deserve better than me breaking my fast of celibacy. I won’t be gentle, kind, or giving. I care about you too much.”

That wasn’t a lie.

She considered his words. There was no way she’d force him. As a victim, she knew what that was like. Then, she had an idea.

“Okay, then how about this. I’ll make a deal with you,” she said.

He was curious as to what he had that she’d possibly want in exchange for the information.

“What?”

She went there.

“Let me see you. I never get to see your handsome face, and I want that more than a kiss. I want to look into your eyes, Remington. They are the windows to the soul.”

That seemed harmless enough.

After he reached for his hood, he dropped it off of his head and lifted his face so she could see him.

All.

Of.

It.

In that moment, she was looking into the face of her soulmate. She knew it too. There had been that click, and in his eyes, she saw that he was well aware.

She said nothing.

For him.

“Are we even?” he asked, shaken by the whole thing.

Truth be told, Remmy didn’t like how he felt. His whole world seemed to be spiraling out of control. There was a pull to her, and he felt stripped bare.

She was staring into his soul, and she’d know the truth about him.
