Done that.

As they sat there, and people stared, she was curious about what the man beside her was thinking.

“Does this make you nervous?” she asked. “They are all talking shit about you.”

He laughed sardonically.

“I can’t blame them. I’d be talking shit about them too if the situation was reversed. I was a good cop until I wasn’t. I wasted my career.”

Lordy, but someone was in a mood.

“I’m going to take a stab at this,” she said. “You and Gene aren’t in a good place, are you?”

He said nothing.

Little did he know, that spoke volumes to her. This wasn’t Elizabeth’s first day at reading a room or solving something.

He was forgetting that.

When he said nothing, she let it go. Far be it for her to push and get up in someone’s business.

Elizabeth hated when people did that to her—and it happened every second of her day.

From the media.

To the president.

Hell.

She was a nonstop speculation to just about everyone around her. If he didn’t want to talk, so be it. That was fine with her.

Instead of his personal life, she broke down her plan of ‘attack’.

“I’m going to get the files, we’re going to view the bodies, and I’m going to give you a cover because right now, people are curious why a bad guy is riding with a Fed.”

He sat there.

Tommy was angry and stirred up.

It had taken him all this time to compose himself after watching his ex-fiancé kissing his old lover.

And he was curious as to why Elizabeth was not pissed off. Her husband was kissing someone else.

What was this?

Finally, he went there.

“Gene and I broke up, not that it really matters at this point. He was kissing your husband. I’m sure you saw him too.”

Oh, she saw.

“And you’re pissed?” she asked.

He glanced over at her.

Tommy was confused.

“How does that not bother you? Is that some weird polyandrous thing that I don’t understand? Since you have spares, you don’t care? You let them run wild, and it’s no biggie?”
