Only, that wasn’t what he wanted.

“I want to go back to work as a cop.”

Oh, well…

“There are lots of…”

He stopped her.

“HERE.”

It took her a second for it to register, and when it did, she stared at him.

Jesus.

H.

Christ.

Now, she understood why Gene was in a tizzy. Coming back to work here…that was a death wish. She was betting that Tommy told him that, and their relationship became an ultimatum tug-o-war.

“Can you get me put back into play?” he asked. “I can help The Hunters and you. I’ll be your eyes and ears in this city. I want to prove I can hold my own. When I’m with The Hunters, I’m left behind to babysit Violet and make cookies. No one thinks I can do this.”

And that should be his warning.

If a bunch of killers made you wear an apron and play house mommy, there was a reason. They let her go out and shoot shit.

Again, there was a reason.

“For the record, they are Marines, and they tend to be one, loco, and two, they run right into danger. They know you’re a cop at heart, and that’s them being respectful of that.”

He wasn’t done.

UNFORTUNATELY.

“They take Gene.”

“Because he was a Fed for over a decade, and on top of that, he held his own at Purgatory undercover. Still, we know how that ended. He got shot.”

Yeah, he persisted.

God.

This was worse than trying to rationalize something to her kids when they wanted something that was dangerous.

Like CJ and EJ getting guns.

“I can do it.”

She wasn’t babysitting a grown-ass man. This wasn’t her problem. If he was leaving The Hunters, that made him free game to the city, and out of her jurisdiction.

“That’s a bad idea, Tommy. That’s dangerous. I really think you should reevaluate that game plan.”

It was clear he wasn’t going to listen, and she wasn’t shocked in the least. Someone was so damn stubborn.

“Please help me.”

Elizabeth hesitated.
