“I know that you got the call from the Director of the FBI since I just got off the phone with my SISTER-IN-LAW. So…”

He tried to play hardball.

Only, he couldn’t.

Elizabeth had cut him off at the pass on this one. Honestly, she didn’t have time for this.

It wasn’t like she was going to legitimately work the cases. She was burying them and playing investigator. They already knew whodunit.

And it wasn’t The Hunters.

“Well, yes, we spoke, but we would like our team involved with you…”

She held up her hand.

What she wanted to do was call Gabe to use that as her leverage, but he was still mourning his wife. The last person she wanted to bother was him.

“I can call my boss who will call her boss, the president. This came down from the top. Don’t ask me why, but it has. Do you want him on the phone? He just lost his wife, and he’s NOT happy.”

The man looked worried.

“Not particularly.”

Well, that worked.

Surprisingly.

“Listen, I am handling the case. The bodies are going back to DC, and we’re going to re-examine for any evidence that might have been missed. I just need the official files, and to meet with your ME to sign off on the transfer.”

He appeared to be willing to help.

“Okay, Deputy Director.”

He slid the four files toward her.

“I’ll call off my detectives. They aren’t going to be happy about it,” he admitted.

She.

Didn’t.

Care.

That was a him problem, not a her problem. She had ninety-nine problems—plus a few more since this morning—and most of them were criminals and Hunters.

Seriously.

If he thought she was going to go play nice with some cops in this city…

PASS.

Standing, she grabbed the files.

“We appreciate your help,” she said, tapping her badge on her hip. “It’s been a pleasure, John. Hopefully, I won’t have to come back here, and if Thomas is back to work, hopefully, you’ll spread the word that he was a good cop who was helping serve the community.”

The man stood and shook their hands.

“It was my pleasure. Thomas, thank you for coming in and working with the FBI. I look forward to hearing about it if you do come back.”
