Eve stared at him.
“What’s that?” she asked.
He flushed red.
“I was saying…”
Zayn saved his ass.
Again.
“That’s because you’re an idiot, Dak. Remmy isn’t. His trauma is not your trauma. If he wants to get hitched, we’ll be there to support him. You needed to get married because you have to have a babysitter twenty-four-seven.”
Eve laughed.
“Not wrong.”
Dakota gave his wife a kiss.
He was glad that he was married, and he was the happiest he’d ever been. He went from alone and miserable to married with a teenager and baby on the way.
It was a good trip for him.
“She can’t have kids,” he said, not sure why he was telling them. “Calyx told me she’s been sterilized.”
There was no surprise there.
“And how do you feel about that?” Stella asked.
He looked over at her, and there were tears in his eyes. The emotions were so close to the surface.
“I can’t do it. I can’t bring another child into the world to have him or her die again. I know you guys have kids, but I lost Kelsy, and I’ll never be the same.”
Rogue patted his arm.
“Your situation would cause anyone to feel that. We understand. We know you’re not telling us our kids are a mistake. You’re telling us that you’re not able to do it. We support you, Remmy.”
He sat there.
As he did, they all moved closer, flanking him, and as they did, they each put their hand on him.
It was a very Marine thing.
“We got you,” Merry said. “We will always have you.”
He nodded.
“I know and I’m grateful no one gave up on me. I’m grateful you stuck and had my back. I wouldn’t be here if you didn’t. Before you guys, I didn’t understand a family. I’ve been under for a long time working and trying to do a job. That you guys hold me up…I’m grateful.”
Jagger stared into his eyes from across the island.
“You’re ours. We defend our own. If you ever need us, Rem, we’ll be there. You’re our brother, and if the day comes when you want to get married, we’ll be there too. I’m just glad you let someone in. See where it goes, and enjoy the journey.”
He told him his other deepest darkest secret.
“Pictures of my wife and child’s rape, along with the murders were on the dark web.”
Stella gasped.
