She was going to have to pull some favors, and get things handled.

They were on the cusp of losing this man.

Sitting beside Gamble, she placed her hand on his hip and could feel his bones.

He was dying.

“Hey, Gamble,” she said, trying to keep it light as she assessed the situation.

He didn’t move.

When she placed the food down, she ran her hand up and down his back, trying to soothe him. He didn’t even flinch. Honestly, if she didn’t see him blinking, she’d think he was already gone.

Yeah, she couldn’t imagine his pain.

Storm had boned him good. Elizabeth didn’t judge because she knew the hell Storm had lived, but taking her child with her…

That was hard.

If she lost her husband, and then that husband decided to kill one of their children…

She’d be in the same state.

Elizabeth wouldn’t survive.

Since she had spoken to Callie, she knew what to do. While this was difficult, she knew how to help someone get over the loss of a spouse.

They all did. It was like when Cyra died, and she helped Chris. Only, truth be told, she didn’t know how to heal a heart after a child was taken.

A little one.

That Gamble had been the one that found them made it all the worst. Viewing a body in the morgue was one thing, but pulling his dead child from that bathtub.

Holy shit.

She wanted to weep for him.

“I came to check on you.”

Nothing.

Gamble didn’t even move.

Elizabeth kept trying.

“We need to get some food in you,” she said. “I can feel your ribs,” she admitted.

He still didn’t move.

“Come on, Gamble. Don’t make me put you in a hospital on a feeding tube to keep you alive. I don’t want to see you like that, but I have to get you to try and live.”

He didn’t want to live.

That was the problem.

“Why didn’t she just take my life too?” he whispered. “Storm should have killed me too. I’m all alone now. All I see is them. All I see is us being a family, and then the blood. I held my dead child and knew she was killed by someone who was supposed to love her. I wasn’t there to protect her.”

She tried to stay composed.
