“We all know that. If you have to make the discovery for yourself, Tommy, I get it. Just be careful. This is going to be dangerous. There will be cops that don’t buy that you weren’t dirty. There will be cops that will watch every move you make. Once you leave, you can’t come here unless there’s no choice. If you’re about to die, reach out. If you aren’t, call me. Then, at least it only looks like you’re being helped by the FBI—not the bad guys.”

He was grateful.

“Thank you for that.”

She pulled out a card and wrote her private number on it.

“Put it in your phone under some silly name like dry cleaners. Then, if you ever get trapped, and need to get help, I’ll come.”

“Even after what just happened?”

She gave him a kiss on the temple.

“Son, especially after what just happened. Families fight but that doesn’t mean they don’t love each other. I kick the shit out of my brother on a regular basis. Whether you believe it or not, you mean something to Gene. He’d want me to save you, so I will.”

He wished he believed that.

Only, he was here, and Gene was with Ethan. To him, that spoke volumes.

“Okay, Elizabeth.”

“Be careful,” she said, going back to Gene’s things and closing the suitcase. “Do you want me to tell Gene anything?” she asked.

He thought about it.

“Yeah, that I love him, but I have to do this. I hope he forgives me.”

Yeah, she hoped he would too.

There was no doubt in her mind that this man was in over his head, and his ego was going to get him killed.

Thomas Bernard was a good cop.

He just wasn’t a killer.

And in NOLA, you had to be.

Case in point?

Her.

And The Hunters.

Gamble’s Room

Placing the suitcase by the hall table, she grabbed the sandwich that she’d made for Gamble, and headed toward his room. When she knocked, he didn’t answer, but that was no big surprise.

This was going to be a battle.

Oh, not with him.

FOR him.

Going into the room, she found him on the bed, curled in the fetal position as he stared at the wall. Just from the look of him, she was pretty sure therapy visits weren’t going to be enough.
