“It’s not going to stick,” she said after they closed the door and moved down the hall so he couldn’t hear them.

Jagger sighed.

“Elizabeth, a VA will kill him. He won’t get a babysitter. They are overfilled and understaffed. Gamble will fall through the cracks and be dead before the month is out.”

She was aware.

“I have a plan.”

Pulling out her phone, she made a video call. Luckily, it was answered on the second ring.

Jagger wasn’t sure what she was doing.

“Director,” the man said, smiling at her.

Jagger took it in. The man on the phone was handsome, British, and in a suit. He had dirty blonde hair and bright, brilliant green eyes.

“Doctor, I’m sorry to bother you,” she said.

“It’s no bother. I’m between patients right now. Is this about the gentleman we spoke of earlier?”

“Yes. I don’t think that weekly visits will be enough.”

He lifted a brow.

“He’s despondent and losing weight. We can barely get him to eat. He needs full-time care.”

“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. I can call the VA…”

She stopped him.

“No. I need you, and I need you full-time. I need you to let him stay with you since you can’t be here. It’s dangerous.”

He blinked.

“I’m sorry, what? Did you just ask me to take in a patient and…”

“And rehab him in your home. He needs to be watched. He needs to be monitored by a doctor.”

“The VA…”

“Not an option.”

Jagger watched Elizabeth work, and he wasn’t sure if she could pull it off.

“Elizabeth.”

She went there.

“Name your price. What will it cost to have you clear your schedule, get a different doctor to take your current caseload, and take on just Gamble Holloway?”

He blinked.

“Elizabeth.”

“I’m not playing. Throw out the number, and then we’ll go from there.”

He laughed.
