He didn’t move.
Honestly, he was afraid to.
“Do you trust me, Ethan?” she asked. “Do you trust me no matter what you think the situation is because I can read a room and navigate things?”
He didn’t hesitate.
“With my life. I wouldn’t question it. We’ve been partners for over a decade, Baby. Why?”
Yeah, her too.
Maybe she was weird, but seeing Ethan with his ex wasn’t making her panic.

“Same. That’s why I’m going to do this because if anything, I’ve learned the universe, or Timothy, in a lot of cases, has a reason for everything.”
Ethan lifted a brow.

Instead, she focused on Gene.
“Here,” she said, handing him a packet.
The minute he saw it, Ethan knew what it was.
He also knew that she was putting her faith in him and their marriage.
Without saying it, she was telling him that he had the power to destroy what they built, and even though she’d been betrayed before, countless times, she was trusting him.
She had nothing to worry about.
He took vows, and he’d never break them. There was too much on the line. They had kids, and there were multiple partners tied up in this.
From where he lay, Gene stared at it.
“Take it,” she said.
Gene did as she requested.
“What’s this?” he inquired.
She dropped the bomb.
“That’s an employment packet for my team. I’m inviting you to come back home and rejoin the FBI. It’s been cleared. You’ve got a position if you’re so inclined. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. You’re five years above the age cutoff for joining the FBI, and the only reason this is happening is because you were an agent for ten plus years.”
His heart skipped.
