Elizabeth wasn’t done.
“What you’re holding is the golden ticket. I rarely offer that up. I’m particular with who I put on my team.”
“Why me?” he asked.
She looked at Ethan, and he smiled at her.
Oh, he knew.
“Because he loves you very much, and there’s nothing he wants more than to have you back in DC so he can have his best friend back. Also, you’ve solved some shit, and we both know it. I won’t have to train you, and that’s important too. You’re a seasoned cop who knows how to evade killers, and survive.”
Gene knew this was more than just lucky. Elizabeth was giving him a gift.
“I don’t know what to say.”
“Nothing yet. Because there’s a downside to this, and I need you to listen and make up your mind. There is no ‘I’ll think about it and change my mind a month from now’.”
He wasn’t sure what this was going to be.
“Okay.”
“First off, you have to pass qualifying. You and the bestie can do it together. He’s up for recert next month, even if he’s a doctor now. Someone still has to pass Hogan’s Alley. Don’t shoot each other in the ass. His is a mighty fine one that I’m sure we’re both fond of.”
Ethan laughed.
“I think I can manage not to do that. I rarely shoot people unless I’m intending to.”
She wasn’t done.
“We need to be blunt.”
He went there.
“I’m not going to break up your marriage and ruin what I have with Ethan.”
She blinked.
“Uh, awkward, Gene. I wasn’t even thinking that.”
There was a pregnant pause, and Ethan started laughing. It appeared that his wife was busting Gene’s balls, and for him, that was a good thing. Elizabeth didn’t harass or tease someone she didn’t like. She ignored them.
“Lyzee, my love, he’ll have a stroke. Take it easy on him.”
Sue her.
It was fun.
She shrugged.
“Sorry. I forgot for a second there that you’ve not had to deal with me in my ass-busting glory.”
From where he was sitting, Gene was getting panicky. He was having a hard time understanding why Elizabeth was so calm when Tommy had been going nuclear.
“I feel clammy.”
She snorted.
“Gene, you’re in bed with a hot man. Clammy is NOT what you should be feeling.”
