She was curious.

“Would you ever burn The Hunters?” she asked, curiously.

He gasped.

“I’d die for them. I love them. They became my family and helped me stay afloat after Preston died.”

And there was the difference between an honorable man, and a wild card.

Tommy was the latter.

“I know. That’s why you’re being given a chance to be on my team. If someone was going to hurt Ethan…”

Gene wasn’t having that.

“I’d take a bullet for him. I’d die for him, you, Callen, or Chris. I know how much you guys mean to him, and he’d hurt if he lost you. I’d do what it takes to save him from feeling the pain that I had to live through when Pres left me.”

She knew that was a fact.

On top of that, Elizabeth had read all of his previous FBI casefiles when he and her husband worked together.

Gene had been a good agent.

Plus, he’d saved Ethan’s ass more times than she could count. In the past, someone wore a bigger bullseye than her.

Apparently.

“Here’s the downside. If you take this job, Gene, you can’t protect Tommy. You’re going back with us when we fly out of here. Tommy made his decision, and you can either stay here to protect him and possibly die in the process or come home.”

God.

He hated that Tommy did this.

It would have been so simple for them to just leave together and start a life as a couple.

So.

Damn.

Simple.

She continued.

“If you come back, and I wouldn’t even send you here as an agent because it’s that dangerous, I can’t protect you from anyone you burned when you were working undercover for us.”

He was aware.

She wasn’t done.

“Ethan can’t protect you either because the second he appears here, word spreads. I know Axelle won’t risk an operation in the city. Our priority are The Hunters and the war that is ready to go down here for NOLA. This city is on the brink.”

He understood.

“To be frank, I have some reservations.”

“About?” he asked, glancing over at Ethan.

She told him.
