“He’ll be okay. Have faith. There seems to be very little of that going around in this city.”
Tears slipped down Gene’s cheeks.
“He’s already dead. They will take him out. There will never be a clean police department here. Ever. He’s got no chance. I came here all of those years ago to help clean it up, and I didn’t. Each year, it gets worse.”
She was aware.
“He also threatened me.”
That had someone’s attention.
Ethan blinked.
“I’m sorry, what?” he asked. “Did you just say that he threatened you?”
Before she could answer, her husband was all riled up.
“What the fuck did he do?” he asked. “I’ll roll myself over to him and whip his ass if he thinks I’m going to let anyone threaten my wife! I don’t care who he was sleeping with. My wife is off limits.”
She patted his leg.
“Not me, per se. No one is that fucking insane. He threatened to police The Hunters. We all know if he tries that, he’s in some shit. I’ll handle him.”
Gene blinked.
“Kill him?”
She stared at him.
“You’re bad at this game of ‘what is Elizabeth talking about’,” she admitted. “Really bad at it.”
He looked at Ethan. The man he’d been in a relationship with explained.
“Think more along the lines of Gitmo. She’ll drop him there and let him grow old in a cell. The Hunters are vital, and I created them. She’ll protect them. Tommy can’t be allowed to destroy that.”
She nodded.
“We don’t let people out, Gene. We gave Storm and Gamble new names, only because we trusted them. When Dakota wanted to leave, he was going to be wiped and remade so we could track him, unbeknownst to him. That we were going to allow you and Tommy to leave…”
He tried to reassure her.
“I would never…”
She stopped him.
“I know you wouldn’t, but still, Ethan is taking full responsibility for you as a Fed on my team, aren’t you, Ethan?”
He laughed.
“Great. You got me grounded too,” he joked when she winked at him.
“I don’t want to cause issues for your team.”
