“I don’t deserve your kindness,” he whispered.
She took his face in her hands.
“We’ll protect you,” she said, giving him a soft kiss. Then, like he’d done with Ethan, Gene rested his forehead on hers.
“God. I never expected to fall in love with my ex’s wife, but here we are,” he joked. “Like I said, it’s been a day of surprises.”
She snorted.
“Titters.”
He shuddered without hesitating.
It made her laugh even more because the man really had a breast aversion.
“Remind me to tell you about the time in the strip club,” Gene said. “It was booby in there.”
“As they usually are. Only, the last one I was in, there was this guy Horse…his dick…”
She held up her hands to describe his girth.
“Did you get his number?” he asked, joking around because that’s what he did. Even though he was empty, he had to keep going.
Gene was scared for Ethan’s sake.
Tommy…his note rattled him.
She winked at him.
“Cupid has your back,” she said. “Trust me. I have this uncanny ability to see two people and put them together. I’m never wrong.”
Honestly, he knew he’d never love again. It was too painful, and he was in a free fall.
What he needed was to land somewhere safe.
When Ethan returned, he was curious.
“Is it safe for a guy who has slept with all the occupants of a room to come in?” he asked. “Or should I go get security to keep me safe?”
She laughed.
“Yeah, handsome. Gene and I worked it out. I’m going to go over the packet. You know, get his signature.”
Gene picked up a pen and signed every page, barely reading anything in there. It was a good thing that was a standard employment packet.
When Ethan patted his lap, she sat in it, and he wrapped his arms around her.
Elizabeth wasn’t done.
“Gene is going to be staying with us until he’s ready to move out. He needs to be somewhere safe.”
Ethan wasn’t shocked.
Elizabeth was a people collector.
“You don’t have to do that,” Gene began.
“I do. You’re family,” she said. “Family has your back, and don’t you want to see your godchildren?” she asked.
