He kinda did.

All he really wanted was to get the hell out of the city, and put a thousand miles between him and Tommy.

Or Ethan and Tommy.

“I do want to see them. It’s been too long. I hope they remember me,” he admitted.

Oh, they did.

When he was done, Gene stacked the papers, and handed them back to her.

“I need you to promise me something,” he said.

He was looking at both Ethan and Elizabeth.

“What?” she asked.

“If anything happens to Tommy, I don’t want to know. He gave me the ultimatum, and he knows that is my least favorite thing. I can’t heal and be hurt over and over again. I need to not know if he dies here, loses his job here, or…anything else. As far as I’m concerned, going forward, we’re done.”

“Is that what you want?” Ethan asked.

He stared into the man’s eyes.

In them, he saw love. No one, other than Preston and Ethan had ever loved him the way he needed.

“Yes.”

Then, he said one last thing.

“Please just help me protect what is left of my heart,” he whispered. “I can’t hurt anymore. I just can’t do it,” he said, being one hundred percent honest.

They could do that.

It was his choice.

“Okay,” Ethan said.

“Thank you.”

When Duke walked in, she knew what it was going to be about. She’d texted him to join her so they could make their evening plan.

If she wasn’t out, it would be odd.

“Lyzee, I got clearance from the police to go to the locations where they found the bodies. It’s going to be hella weird to walk around but not really try to work the case.”

She laughed.

“Stranger things have happened in this city. That’s for damn sure.”

“Like what?” Duke asked, grinning.

“Like me moving Ethan’s ex into our house so he can check out his ass in his swim trunks.”

Duke looked back and forth between them, and the look said it all. He, too, thought she was loco.

Gene shrugged.

“I mean, in my defense, he’s got a really amazing ass,” he joked, trying to keep it light. “This one time, we were in wine country and alone in the vineyard during a FULL MOON…”
