“What the fuck are you doing?” Adder asked.

“Uh, I was watching the house. I followed two men back here a few days ago. You can lower your guns.”

Neither moved.

Okay, someone was paranoid—more than him.

“Really. Chill out.”

Both women put their fingers on the trigger.

Yeah, this hadn’t gone like he thought it would.

Apparently, Snakes had some issues with a Spider.

That meant one thing.

Someone had crossed their paths before, and it hadn’t ended well.

This was a standoff.

A bad one.

Monday

Five P.M.

Inside The Underground

It had been a slow afternoon, and at one point, Remington had thought about going back to Chartres to wait for Calyx there.

The place was slow, and the same five people were sitting in the bar, drinking.

He hadn’t been paying much attention to them, simply because he was watching Calyx.

It was getting difficult to focus.

When she bent over, he’d be lying if he said he hadn’t checked out her ass.

It.

Was.

Spectacular.

Now, she was doing barback duties, filling in beer.

As she carried the cases in, he wanted to go help her, but he knew that he had to keep tucked away in the corner. Deep down, he knew that if anyone suspected he had an attachment to Calyx, a deeper one than they already knew, she’d be in danger.

So, he watched.

When she filled the cooler, and broke down the boxes to carry the empty cases out through the back to the dumpster, he saw it.

Two of the men who had been sitting there looked around, and decided to follow her out.

He was pretty sure that had been what they were doing, and that set the hair on the back of his neck to standing up.
