He went down fighting.

There was no doubt in his mind why this was happening.

Artemis.

Damn her.

She’d set this up.

No wonder the bar was dead. She’d likely told everyone on her payroll to disappear for the day, and all that was left were a few people she didn’t own.

Oh, and these five.

He fought hard, managing to bloody one, even on his back on the ground.

Then, he saw the gun, and it came crashing down on his temple.

The pain shot through him, as he focused on Calyx.

The edges grayed, and he saw two men dragging her toward a moving truck. Only, he couldn’t help her.

No one could.

He.

Went.

Out.

The last word was her name, and he knew the truth.

He was losing her too.

From the arms of the complete stranger, Calyx saw him go down, and she bit the man who had her. She bit him so hard that she tasted blood in her mouth, and it wasn’t hers.

He hit her in the face, knocking her to the ground, as she tried to get away.

Calyx saw stars and gasped a deep breath. That was going to be what saved them.

As soon as she took that deep breath, the second man had the rag in his hand, and she knew what was coming.

Chloroform.

Shit.

Holding her breath, she had just enough time before the rag was shoved over her face.

Oh, she fought, and she played the game.

It was now her job to protect Remington.

He was bleeding and out cold.

She slowed her fighting down and pretended to succumb to the fumes.

As soon as she did, they held the rag to her face for maybe another five seconds.

Then, pulled it away.
