He screamed in pain, as Calyx scrambled out of the van, going around to look for keys or anything that could help them.

Remington grabbed the crowbar and got ready to do battle. He charged the one guy as he was up, hitting him in the chest with the bar.

He went down.

The next one was up, and he went for his gun, but Remington was fast. He booted him in the knee, breaking it. Then, he clubbed him in the head with the crowbar.

When he went to turn, that’s when he heard it. There was the telltale pop of a gun from the man currently missing his junk.

And there was also the pain that went with it.

Something hit Remington in the side, piercing his flesh. The burn was familiar, and he knew he was shot.

So close too.

He leveled the man, nearly taking his head off with the crowbar.

Calyx came running, and she slid to a stop.

“Oh, God.”

His gray hoodie had a blood stain forming.

“I’m good,” he said, knowing he wasn’t. “We have to go,” he said, seeing the warehouse. Remington knew what he’d left in the message to anyone who came looking for him.

They were going west.

“We don’t know if there are more. Did you find anything?” he asked.

She shook her head.

“No keys. Just a phone.”

Theirs were toast, and he knew out here…they might not have reception.

Grabbing the men’s guns, he checked to make sure he’d taken care of them.

Oh, and he did.

They were dead.

“We gotta go,” he said, pulling her by the hand. “They’ll have heard the sounds if there is anyone inside.”

They began running.

For their lives.

On foot.

Into the swamp.

Yeah, this was not going to be fun for Remmy and Calyx, but the gators…
