Tommy stared at him.

There was that long, uncomfortable silence.

“But up North?” he asked.

Gene was confused.

Tommy was well aware that they’d been tossing the idea of going elsewhere around after the last case chasing Chevy.

They’d discussed it a few times.

Being a Hunter didn’t sit well with Tommy because as of late, they’d had to kill even more cops, dirty or not, and it was getting dangerous.

On top of that, Gene was the oldest of The Hunters, and while he loved saving people, he’d come here to solve shit.

He wanted out.

He wanted Tommy to go with him, so the Russians didn’t use either of them as targets. The Hunters were mercenaries, but he and Tommy had been cops.

They weren’t nearly as dangerous as the rest of the team.

It was time.

Besides, his brain needed to be working, and there was too much downtime for him in between missions.

“We discussed it. Are you saying you don’t want to leave now?” he asked.

Tommy wasn’t saying that.

It wasn’t the geographical location as much as the people they’d be near.

One specific.

His fiancé had been calling Ethan a lot as of late, and that made Tommy edgy.

Really.

Edgy.

Oh, he had the conversations with him right there, and on speakerphone, but Gene smiled more and was a different person when he spoke to Ethan or was around him.

It pissed him off.

“Well, I’m not saying that, but what do you think we will be doing?” he asked. “We have to work. Shouldn’t we interview for some police departments first? Like the Capitol police or…”

Gene leaned in and gave him a kiss to cut him off. There was no doubt in his mind that he’d be welcomed back to the FBI.

He was older, but he’d done over ten years there, and he knew his best friend, Ethan, could help that happen.

For him.

“Well, there are lots of police agencies all over the place. We can head to DC, and we can both go back to work. I know a few people…,” he teased, wiggling his eyebrows.

Oh, hell, no.

This was his worst-case scenario.

Tommy put the pen down.
