The system hummed.

“There are other people in the proximity of the vests,” MATE offered. “The Major is about to have company.”

Oh, holy shit.

“Show me,” Merry said, worried about the four people in the swamp.

As she asked, six red dots appeared.

Oh, boy.

Immediately, she linked to Maura, opening the communicator on her vest.

“Uh, Major, I hate to bother you, but you have company. There are six red dots, and they aren’t gators. You might need to evade them.”

Oh, well, Maura knew that wasn’t happening. This was a swamp. There wasn’t really a way to evade it. It was more fight and survive.

“Are they people?” she asked, looking around. It was pitch black, and the only reason they could see was their night vision.

Merry knew who would know.

“MATE? Identify the sources.”

MATE did just that.

“They are people. It’s human heat sources.”

That was all she needed to hear.

“Where?” Maura asked as the other three people around her each faced in a direction, waiting to see any sign of life.

“They are coming from an eastward direction,” MATE offered.

Shit.

That was the warehouse.

Wolf had said he saw a car come and go.

That meant one thing.

“Artemis must be looking for her people and Remington. By now, she’s suspicious. She knows that he got away. I don’t think they know we’re here.”

Oh, they hoped not.

“They must have tracked the blood to the swamp, and are doing what we’re doing.”

“Well, then, we have to stop them,” Reaper said. “We can’t have them getting past us.”

That meant one thing.

“Let’s play games,” Jagger whispered. “I’m going to bet they aren’t Marines,” he added as they heard them in the water. They were trying to scare some snakes and gators away.

Only, Artemis’ mercenaries had a bigger issue.

A bunch of Marines who did really well in the dark when undetected.

“Go silent,” Maura said. “Divide up.”
