Had.

Not.

In fact, he’d not heard a single peep from the man, and that made him curious—plus a little angry.

It was time to see if they could work this out. After spending a night alone, he wasn’t happy.

While the apartment was nice, and Axelle had vowed to work her magic and get him back on the police force, in some capacity, he wasn’t accustomed to being alone.

He shouldn’t be alone.

After all, he’d earned his place in Gene’s life. When he’d been shot, whose house did he come to?

HIS.

When he’d needed defending, who did it?

HIM.

Now, of course, Ethan Blackhawk would roll into town, flash that grin at him, and make the man think he had a chance at getting him back.

If Ethan loved him, at all, all of those years ago, he would have left with him—not let him walk away.

Right?

Tommy wasn’t going to stand there and not put up a fight for Gene.

It was in his best interest.

Someone’s judgment was clearly clouded.

Pulling out his phone, he dialed the man’s number, not sure if it was still an active one. With Ethan smuggling him away, he wasn’t sure.

It didn’t take long for him to answer.

“Yes?” Gene asked, surprised that the man was calling. Him and Ethan had been sitting on the couch at the hotel, his head in Ethan’s lap as he comforted him.

It had been a long night of working, but now that Elizabeth was gone to go handle the situation, he and Ethan had taken a break.

A crying one.

Well, he was the one sobbing. Ethan was the one listening to him.

“Gene?” Tommy asked.

That chill ran through him as he thought about the note that the man had delivered with Elizabeth.

The ultimatum.

Oh, and he wasn’t happy.

“What do you want, Tommy?”

That ice was in his voice.

“Did you get my letter?” Tommy asked, not sure if he did or not. This was Elizabeth. She’d protect her husband blindly.

Gene didn’t hesitate.
