There was a pause.
What Tommy expected was for Gene to be conciliatory, and wanting to change his mind.
That was not what he was getting.
Damn Ethan Blackhawk.
His claws were already in him.
“So, am I to assume that you’ve made your choice?” he asked.
Gene didn’t hesitate.
“Yes. I’m going to DC. We discussed this. What I will say is what gives you the audacity to tell me I have to cut people out of my life? I would never do that to you. This is exactly what I meant. You’re out of control.”
Tommy was getting angry all over again.
“I have questions and I need answers before we dissolve this,” he said.
Gene didn’t care anymore.
He needed to get space between them.
“Why didn’t you tell me about your sexual preferences?” he asked. “You’re a dirty bottom?”
Gene didn’t hesitate.
“What good would it have done telling you? As for am I, yes, that’s absolutely true. Preston and I would switch, but mainly, he was the top.”
Tommy was pissed.
“Then why weren’t you with me? I would have learned. I could have adjusted.”
Gene stopped him.
“Because you couldn’t be that person for me. You aren’t compatible with my past. I had to be this person for you. I was willing to change for you. That’s what this was all about, Tommy. I was willing. What kind of partner would I have been had I rubbed it in your face?”
“It’s because I’m not him.”
Gene was over this.
“No, you’re not. You’re also not Preston. You were Tommy, and I loved you for you. You don’t try to force someone to be anyone different. We are who we are.”
“You didn’t give me a chance.”
Gene was done with all of this.
“I’m not staying here because you demand I lose a person who has been in my life twenty years, Tommy. He’s been a part of me longer than you have.”
“I see.”
“Do you? You said what was on your mind, so I will say this. Neither Ethan nor Preston ever asked me to turn someone out of my life in jealousy. That’s a you issue, Tommy, not a me issue.”
Tommy needed to know the truth.
“You still love him, don’t you?”
