“You look like shit, Remington.”

He laughed.

“You say the sweetest things, LaRue. Did anyone ever tell you that?” he asked.

She snorted.

“Thanks for getting me sprung. I’m going to assume that you took out the trash?”

Oh, he could say that.

“Yeah, about that. We need to talk,” she admitted. “About Artemis.”

Oh, well, he figured as much.

“Be gentle. I’ve had a rough night. I spent it with a fever, some gators, and nightmares.”

She would be.

Sometimes, it was best to pull off the bandage, and not beat around the bush.

“I have to tell you something.”

He was curious.

“What?”

“I’m proud of you, and I’m glad you’re my friend,” she said because she really was.

He was confused.

“Uh, what is this about?” he asked. “This isn’t like you, Elizabeth. Why do I feel like I’m about to get blindsided?”

Because he was.

“I have something for you.”

She slid the file to him, and Remington opened it.

Inside, he read it over, and when he looked up, he was even more confused.

“I don’t understand.”

She told him.

“You know it’s my job to solve, Right?”

He nodded but said nothing.

“There’s one mystery that I don’t understand. It’s bothered me for a while, and coming here dropped it right in my lap.”

“And that is?”

“How did El Gato find your family?”

He flinched.

It was visible, and she didn’t miss it.
