Someone hung himself in transport as he was being flown to Guantanamo Bay.

So she wouldn’t know.

Well, until it was too late.

That meant making sure her family was safe, and that was always her priority. With her job, and the danger that came with it, Elizabeth knew that every day was a risk.

But if she didn’t take it, who would?

She’d just made a couple of calls. The first being to Wyler, to make sure the kids were all doing well. Then, a little surprise one, calling in a favor.

Not for her.

No.

For The Hunters.

When she returned to her seat, Ethan and Gene were there, playing cards, as her husband was trying to distract the man.

“Hey, Baby,” he said. “What were you doing?” he asked.

She just smiled.

“Checking in with Wyler. The kids are excited. They heard that we’re on our way back.”

She pulled a snack from her pocket, that she had gotten from the galley, and handed it to Artemis’ mother.

“Thank you, Sweetheart,” the older woman said as she unwrapped it.

“You’re welcome, Mom.”

Ethan just shook his head.

Elizabeth was attached to the woman, and he was sure that she felt guilty too. Her daughter was dead, and they all knew who called in those chips.

HER.

She focused on Gene because she didn’t want to think about anything else for now.

“Ready to start your new life?” she asked.

He nodded.

Gene knew it wasn’t going to be easy starting over again, but he knew he’d have a family now.

“Thank you for taking me in.”

She stopped him.

“There’s no reason to thank me. Ethan loves you, and that means I love you too. You’re family, and you are ours.”

Ethan patted his leg, leaving his hand on it.

It comforted him.

“Did he get his new position?” he asked, knowing she’d know who he was talking about.

“Yes.”
