Gene had said he didn’t want to know, but he was curious.

“What is it?” he asked.

She looked over at Ethan.

He nodded.

“He’s back in the captain’s chair. The man who replaced him was bumped to commissioner. Tommy is now in charge of the homicide division.”

Gene closed his eyes.

“Jesus.”

Ethan put his arm around his shoulders, and he leaned into him. There, he kissed him on the temple.

“Have faith,” he whispered.

Gene was trying.

Elizabeth saw him struggling.

“He’s being watched,” she said, out of the blue.

That had his full attention.

“What do you mean?” he asked, staring at the woman across from him.

“Do you really think I’m going to let him run loose in New Orleans? He knows too much, Gene. He’s dangerous to The Hunters. Reaper is watching him.”

Gene sighed.

Ethan was staring at his wife.

He knew the burden on her shoulders. He knew that she was balancing so much, and what the cost was.

He’d been there.

“So he’ll be safe?” Gene asked.

Ethan knew that was anything but the truth. If Reaper, a Spider, was on the ground in New Orleans, he was there for one reason and one reason alone.

To ensure that The Hunters kept doing what they’d been put into play to do.

“Sure,” she said, knowing that was anything but the truth.

“Well, there’s that,” Gene said. “Thank you.”

Ethan didn’t look away from his wife, and he knew what she was thinking.

He could read her.

“So, Mom, are you ready to go home?” Elizabeth asked, changing the topic.

She had to.

What Gene didn’t seem to get was that if Tommy came for The Hunters…

A spider would be coming for him.

He’d die.

Because in New Orleans, they had to protect their assets—no matter what.

She had no choice.

Thomas Bernard was now in charge of his own fate.

UNBEKNOWNST to him.

And that could really suck.
