Jinx tossed an apple into the sink behind Zayn, making him nearly jump out of his skin.

They all found that funny.

“I hate you assholes,” he said, trying not to laugh himself.

“I think I might,” Remington said. “I plan on staying, so I want my wife and daughter close. Thank you for the suggestion.”

“It’s what family does,” Jinx admitted. “We got you. We’re your family now.”

He smiled.

And appreciated that.

Before he could say more, they heard footsteps, and they knew who it would be.

Gene.

And he sounded displeased. His gait was heavy, lumbering, and…

When they saw him, they’d been right.

Uh-oh.

Someone was cranky.

He took his seat, and Tommy wasn’t with him.

“Are you both ready for the morning meeting?” Maura asked.

He laughed sardonically.

“I am. Tommy…who the fuck knows?”

Oh, boy.

That said it all.

“You good?” Maura asked as she poured him a cup of coffee and slid it down the counter to him.

“Just peachy.”

They waited for him to comment, but they could already guess what it was about.

A relationship issue.

Honestly, as of late—over the last week, they’d noticed that Tommy was edgy, and that made Gene the same. Something was out of sync with them.

Yeah, this was something they all saw, especially with Sarah, and it never ended well.

There was a storm coming, and that was never a good sign. This had shades of Cordelia and Sarah all over it.

Maura took that as her cue since Gene wasn’t saying anything more. If he wanted to talk, he would.

There was no doubt about that.

Apparently, they were not waiting for Tommy to join them since there had likely been a fight.

“We need to discuss our plan of action,” Maura said. “What we know is the Russians are coming, but we don’t know why.”
