“For?”

“Doubting this,” she offered. “You will be an amazing father. I can tell. As for husband, you’re perfect for me, Gamble. I hope our child has your beautiful soul and eyes.”

His heart thumped in his chest, ricocheting all over as it shattered into pieces. He wasn’t perfect for her.

He hadn’t been enough.

Their beautiful daughter did have his eyes. She had them and he missed them. He saw them when he looked in the mirror, but he also saw that pain.

That devastation.

Once more, he was pulled back under, and the dream took over.

“I love us together, Gamble. Hold me. I need you to hold me.”

What choice did he have?

At that moment, Gamble knew he would do anything in his power to keep her safe and protect their child.

In this dream, she was still alive.

They both were.

When her hands navigated beneath his shirt, his body shook. Gamble began pulling fervently at her clothing.

He wanted her naked.

Desperately.

He tossed her shirt.

He tossed her jeans.

When she lay beneath him on the bed in just her bra and panties, he stripped her of those too.

Then, he kissed her belly.

“Be a girl,” he whispered as if he could somehow hedge fate to make it happen.

The words just came out, and he couldn’t stop them. It was like some sick torture where you could hear yourself but couldn’t stop yourself.

He couldn’t stop the dream.

He couldn’t stop the words.

Please just let me die. Please just put me somewhere empty and quiet. I can’t do this.

“Someone is overdressed,” Storm stated, smiling up at him. “Maybe you can handle that too.”

Oh, he would.

“Maybe you could help me out.”

She did just that.

With gentle fingers, she undid the buttons on his pants and dropped his zipper.

Gamble held his breath as he was above her. When her hands went back under his shirt and slid up his back to strip him, he stared into her eyes to see if she reacted to the bumps and burn scars there.
