Then, Elizabeth read the room.
FAST.
From where she stood, she could see that Gene was not happy.
He had those stress lines on his brow.
Because she was privy to the conversations Ethan and Gene had since they didn’t have secrets, she knew that they were having pre-marital issues.
For Ethan, she’d let him take care of his friend and ex.
“Okay, but don’t go alone. It’s dangerous out there, handsome, and our security will shit its collective pants. Send Ivan in so he’s not alone either.”
She didn’t trust Artemis, who knew way too much about her and her people.
Ethan was grateful his wife saw the whole picture and gave him an opening to get Gene out of there.
In that moment, he knew who he had to pick.
“Gene, will you back me up?” he asked.
That seemed to lighten the gloom that was surrounding Gene. He glanced over, and there was relief in his eyes that he was getting out of there.
The last thing he wanted was a domestic squabble in front of the people he loved, and he knew Tommy.
He’d call Ethan out in front of the whole room. That would make Gene angry.
Ethan was off limits in a fight, and Tommy knew it. Ethan had a special place in his heart.
“Absolutely,” he said, smiling.
Know who didn’t like that?
Tommy.
He stared at the two, and if looks could kill, someone would have been in a body bag and on their way to the morgue.
Elizabeth saw it too.

Shit.
Ethan said there was tension because of him between Gene and Tommy, but he didn’t say there was this kind of aggression.
Tommy appeared to want blood, and she couldn’t let that happen.
Ethan was off limits.
All of her husbands and family were. She didn’t give two shits if this man was Gene’s significant other. One shot at Ethan, and she’d put Tommy down.
Literally.
Through a table.
“If you’ll excuse us,” Ethan said, giving Elizabeth a kiss on her cheek. “Don’t do anything that will burn the city down until I get back to babysit you,” he teased, squeezing her hand in gratitude.
She actually laughed.
