“Tommy is very insecure. He doesn’t realize that when we broke up, it wasn’t out of anger or infidelity. We both chose to move on, and we left still in love with each other.”

“It never went away.”

Ethan smiled at him.

“No, it never did. I love you as much as I did back then, and I remember every moment we made together. We built a romance that was story worthy.”

He glanced over.

“In case I never said it, Ethan, thank you for the best seven years of my life.”

He leaned over.

“Trust me, Gene. It was my pleasure. You healed me so I could be here today. If there wasn’t you, none of my life would exist, and my wife knows that. My husband knows it too.”

Gene was glad this man had the love he deserved. He wanted that for Ethan.

Gene brushed a piece of his hair behind his ear with his pinky.

“You healed me too. It wasn’t a one-way street, EJ. Trust me on that.”

Ethan let him off the hook.

“As for coming back, absolutely, I’ll talk to her. She’ll do what she can, but if you want back, it won’t be with Tommy. She’ll never hire him.”

He was surprised.

“Why?” he asked, knowing Tommy wouldn’t come back anyway. They’d already had that argument.

“Between you and I?” he asked.

Gene sipped his coffee and nodded.

“My wife is really good at reading a person and situation. That’s her sixth sense. Know how your gut saved our ass so many times?”

“Yes.”

“Hers does the same. Don’t repeat this, but she’s pretty much the female version of you.”

He laughed.

“Not an insult since she’s the best freaking Fed that ever walked the planet, and everyone wants to be her, so I’ll take it.”

“She doesn’t like him. I can tell when she watches him. Elizabeth is a…”

“A what?”

“In a pack of people, she’s the alpha predator. She can spot weakness, and with him, she gets a look on her face. The bottom line is that she doesn’t trust him.”

Gene let him talk.

“She’s been right about a lot of people.”

Desdemona.

Salem Dane.
