“I was looking for my daughter.”

“Hey. I think it’s your mom.” There was some murmuring on the other end of the line, and then the man said, “What’s your daughter’s name?”

She was irritated. She called her daughter, and now her daughter had a gatekeeper? She didn’t even know this man. She wanted to demand his name, but that wasn’t going to be the way to her daughter’s good graces. She needed to be humble. After all, it wasn’t like she’d never made mistakes.

So she spoke, even while her heart cried.

“Alyssa. I’m looking for Alyssa.”

“Your name?” she heard the man murmur from a distance like he turned his face away from the phone.

“You have the right phone, but she doesn’t want to talk right now. It’s... Whoa. It’s one o’clock. I need to get to work. Gotta go, lady.” The phone went dead.

Sucking in a breath, Kim allowed her hand to drop slowly to her lap, checking to make sure that the phone was off before she just sat there.

Lord? My daughter. I love her. Please take care of her. Bring her back to You.

Was there anything else she could do? Prayer didn’t feel like much, but it was everything. God could do anything. Even bring her daughter back.

Whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report...think on these things.

Snippets of a verse she’d memorized years ago came back to her.

Maybe that was the Lord prompting her, she wasn’t sure, but she almost laughed. What good could she see in this situation?

But at least whoever was with her daughter today had a job. Hopefully it wasn’t a job dealing drugs, and despite the horror that that thought filled in her soul, she laughed. Well, there were always good sides and bad sides, she supposed.

Her daughter was alive. That was good. God was faithful in His promises, and He could do anything. That was something else that was good.

She started thinking about things she could be thankful for. Thankful for the health of the baby she carried, thankful that Davis was there to help her start her business. Thankful that they talked about horses at the diner and Griff had come and made his offer. There were a lot of things to be thankful for. She didn’t have to always look at the negative and allow it to get her down.

With that thought, she smiled a little to herself, leaned her head back on the back of the couch, and slowly drifted off to sleep, dreaming of horses and business and daughters that came home, and lacing through it all were the deep blue eyes of a man who was steadfast and sure.
