“Are you sure? He really doesn’t deserve this much. You’ve already given him way more than he had any right to ask.”

“I know. But I don’t want to fight, not if we can help it, and if this can be settled amicably by me giving a little bit more than what I need to, then that’s what we’ll do.” Davis held the phone to his ear while he laced his shoes. He was three miles down the beach, in the middle of his run, getting ready to turn around, when his lawyer had called. He was a little early for most law firms, but his lawyer was unusual in that he ran early hours so he could get off early and go boating.

That worked just fine for Davis, and they’d had a good working relationship for years. Although, Jerome had not been very happy with Davis’s insistence that Todd get whatever he wanted as they dissolved their partnership.

There was no way Davis could continue to be a partner with Todd after what he’d done to Kim, even if Davis weren’t thinking that hopefully Todd’s former wife would decide to be his.

He smiled, thinking about their lunch yesterday, and the way her hair fell around her face, the way she was concerned about Charlotte and Griff and even about Davis. The struggle she had taking over her own house and putting Davis out.

He could see it was still an issue for her. And he loved that. Loved what it said about her, and how it showed that she cared.

He guessed that if she weren’t pregnant, she would have insisted on taking the stable apartment herself.

He supposed they would have ended up fighting over who got to live in the stable.

“All right. I’ll have some papers for you to sign when you make it back down this way. How soon do you think that’s going to be?”

“I don’t know. A week. Maybe two.” He didn’t want to think about work, think about leaving Strawberry Sands.

“Is that the best you can do for me? You’re not sure? A week or two?”

“I know. You have a busy schedule, and you’d like to have me penciled in, but... I really don’t know.”

He wasn’t going to schedule anything if he could be helping Kim. All the things that he thought were important in the first part of his life didn’t seem important at all now. Especially now that he knew Kim was carrying his child.

That made him smile even bigger. While he knew having children wasn’t all peaches and roses, he loved that there was a connection that kept Kim from totally walking away from him.

“If you wanted to do something nice for your wife, if you wanted her to know that you love her, what would you do?”

Davis almost kicked himself. Men didn’t ask other men that question. Not unless they were in counseling.

His lawyer grunted. And then he said, “You know you’re on the clock.”

“I’ll pay for this.”

“I’m divorced.”

“And what did you learn from that?”

“You’re still on the clock.”

“I’m still paying.”

“I learned that women are liars and cheaters and they’re after your bank account. And if they find one that’s bigger than yours, they’ll ditch you pretty fast for it.”

“Ouch. What’d you learn about yourself?”

“I’m still on the clock.”

“And I’m still paying. Charge me double if you want to, because I want your honest answer.”

“All right. Double time. I learned I’m a jerk.”

“And what are you doing about that?”

“Triple time?”

“Stop it. We both know you’re not going to charge me extra. And you’re not going to charge me for personal advice. What are you going to do about it?”
