Chapter 20

When they got backto the room, Bill and Bev were waiting for them. Kim greeted them with a huge smile, which caused both of them to blink, look at each other, and then look back at her like they weren’t quite sure what was wrong.

“I take it everything’s okay?” Bev said hesitantly, like she couldn’t figure out why in the world Kim would be smiling.

“It’s more than okay.” She glanced at Davis, who smiled back at her. They shared a little humor at the way their smiles discombobulated her parents. And how it mirrored what they’d been saying. How when people do things correctly, in a Christian manner, it oftentimes seemed unexpected, because so few people did that.

Kim said a silent prayer that she would be able to continue to have peace and trust the Lord. Then, she told her parents everything she knew, getting sleepier and sleepier as she got further into her story.

Finally, Davis suggested that he move her from her wheelchair to her bed, and she didn’t protest.

To her embarrassment, she fell asleep before her parents left, but not before she saw the pastor walk in. She was pretty sure she greeted him but wasn’t entirely certain when she woke up much, much later.

Davis sat in the chair beside her bed, one of his hands holding hers, his head leaning back, his mouth partially open, and small snores escaping as he breathed in and out.

She smiled. He looked a little younger in sleep. But just as devastatingly handsome.

She watched him for a bit, not moving, not wanting to awaken him. Content. Unbelievably content.

She couldn’t believe that she wasn’t more worried or concerned, but the conversation that she had with him was everything she needed to hear, everything she needed in order to put her trust completely in God and know that He had their very best interests at heart.

Those feelings got her through the hard days ahead as Kathleen fought for life. Her doctors were awesome, and Kim spent as much time as she could with her.

Davis didn’t leave her side for the first two days, but he had to go home on Wednesday when they were getting the horses.

It was funny that he had just left when her lunch arrived, and as the aide who delivered it was leaving, Kim’s phone rang.

She glanced at the caller ID before she swiped to answer.

It was Todd.

She almost didn’t answer when she saw that it was him.

But while he hadn’t treated her well, being unkind to him in return was not exactly what a Christian should do. She knew it, even as she wanted to ignore him or at the very least be mean. The new peace that filled her soul allowed her to almost smile as she swiped her phone.

“Hello?” She was kind of shocked that her voice sounded friendly and kind.

“Kim. It’s Todd.”

“I know.”

Mashed potatoes steamed on the tray in front of her, along with a piece of meat, and a dinner roll which looked delicious. Her mouth watered.

“Hey, I was hoping you were getting out of the hospital today, and I thought maybe we could go somewhere for dinner?”

She blinked. Her mouth opening, then closing, then opening again. “Todd. I just had a baby.”

“I know. But it’s going to be in the hospital for a while. I figured I’d take you out. You know, to celebrate and all that.”

“If they let me out of the hospital, I’m going to go to the NICU, and that’s where I’m going to be until they kick me out.”

“They won’t let you stay there all night. You can come home with me. We’ll get a hotel or something together.”
