“We should all go to the hospital and get properly checked out,” Sienna commented, but wasn’t surprised by the reactions she’d received. It wasn’t like she actually expected anyone to agree with her and follow her to the doctor, but she had to at least put it out there.

“You go,” Jensen told her, then looked around the table. “We have a lot to deal with.”

Sienna pursed her lips in a thin line, her eyes filling up with tears again, but she didn’t let them fall. She didn’t want to go to the hospital alone, not knowing what waited for her there.

“I’ll go with you.”

With a surprised expression, she turned toward the direction of the voice. Her mother gave her a hopeful look, waiting for her permission to accompany her. Sienna’s lips curled up into a grateful smile, and she nodded.

“I think I would like that,” she told her mother.

“Be careful out there,” Sienna’s father said and looked around as if to see who else could go with them.

“Adrianna and I will drive them,” Angel said, pushing his chair back and stood up. “I’ll go get the car ready.”

Sienna’s chest warmed up with emotion she couldn’t quite describe, but knew it was positive. Her family was stepping up to help her. They did it since the start, but she was too scared to let them in and instead worked very hard to keep a wall up between them. Nonetheless, it didn’t stop them from showing up again and again. They left their home and moved closer to her, bringing their people and offering their resources to protect her. They accepted her into their midst without a second thought, giving her love and protection.

“I’ll call you when I have some news,” Sienna told the Carrington heirs, knowing that they were worried about Aiden just as much as she was, but they didn’t have the luxury to drop everything and sit by his bedside. She was determined to do it for all of them.

Before leaving, Sienna had decided she had enough time to give each heir a kiss on the cheek. They were all hurt, but no one moved away and instead gratefully accepted her small gesture of love. When she came to her father, she couldn’t help herself and gave him a hug. It was quick and awkward, but it communicated everything she felt. Patrick gave her a smile and gently squeezed her shoulder.

“I want you to do all the tests,” he told her. “Don’t worry about the medical bills or anything. I want to be sure that we don’t miss anything, okay?”

Sienna smiled and nodded. There were times when she had forgotten how it felt like to have a father, a person who cared about you and looked after your well-being without expecting anything in return.

Her mother waited for her at the door, and together they went to the garage or whatever was left of it. Sienna wasn’t sure if there were any cars left, but her brother told her to go there.

From around the corner, a black SUV came into view. When the windows rolled down, Sienna could see Angel behind the wheel and Adrianna in the passenger seat. Wordlessly, Sienna and her mother joined them in the back. No one made a comment about how the car belonged to Kyle. It didn’t matter as long as it would take them where they needed to go.

Sienna jumped out of the car before Angel fully stopped. Now that she was in the hospital, it was as if she was being driven by an invisible force that insistently pulled her toward Aiden. She walked like she was in a trance, seemingly knowing the way. She followed her heart, not doubting it even for a moment that it would lead her to Aiden.

She had arrived on the surgery floor and immediately located Mrs. Carrington. Aurora was seated in the waiting area, looking older than ever before. Her hair was unkempt, and her eyes swollen from all the crying. She was a woman who had lost her husband and was waiting to hear the news about her son, who was fighting for his life.

“How is he?” Sienna asked when she approached her.

Aurora’s eyes darted upward, and the moment when her brain processed who it was that stood in front of her, the old woman pushed herself onto her feet and pulled Sienna into a hug. Sienna joined her tears with Aurora’s, and together they cried until there were none left. Only then, Aurora gathered enough strength to talk.

“It’s bad. It’s really bad,” she said, her voice breaking and trembling. “They took him to surgery. He has some internal injuries and damage to his organs. I don’t know. I just know that it’s bad.”

Sienna’s gut clenched painfully, and she doubled over, fighting for breath. She knew Aiden was badly hurt. She saw him lying on the floor in a puddle of his own blood, but she allowed herself to hope that he would be okay. She wasn’t strong enough to deal with losing him. He had to get better. He had to.

“Honey, we need to get you checked out,” her mother gently pulled her back to reality. “There’s nothing you can do here for him right now. He’d want you to make sure you’re okay. Come on, let’s find a doctor, and as soon as they’re done, we’ll come back here.”

Sienna looked at Aurora, who nodded.

“Go make sure you’re okay. We’ve already lost so much,” Aurora told her, which reminded Sienna of her loss.

“I’m sorry about your husband,” Sienna said, feeling guilty all over again for bringing them in the middle of this. “He was a good man.”

“Yes, he was,” Aurora said and cupped Sienna’s cheek. “Go, child.”

Sienna took her mother’s hand and followed her to the ground floor where the emergency department was. She allowed them to sedate her as they did their tests. Right now, she only needed two things – Aiden to be okay, and sleep. She couldn’t do anything regarding the former, but the latter was completely in her control, so she closed her eyes and let her mind be taken away by the sedatives.

CHAPTER 23

Oneweekhadpassed, but the time didn’t make the profound pain for the losses any easier. Quite the opposite, now that they had time to take a breath, everyone seemed to hurt even more. With no distractions, there was nothing to keep their minds from repeating the endless loop of the horrible events that had brought them to this point.

Adrianna offered to help Sienna one last time getting dressed. Tomorrow she would be leaving with Angel. It was hard for Sienna to imagine her life without her best friend, but after everything she has been through, Sienna was glad that Adrianna had found happiness with her little brother. The Carrington heirs were always nice to her, but the difference in status couldn’t be ignored. It was the way they were raised and that was the way it stayed. Angel didn’t see her like that, and they managed to build something new and fresh from nothing.
