“What are they doing?” Sienna wondered out loud.

“I don’t know, but we have to assume it’s for the good of our partnership. Let’s hope that their love for you is real. It’s not easy to accept into your home a long-lost daughter, especially under the circumstances our society lives in,” Mr. Carrington said. “With time, we learned to forget about our blood and focus on the people living in our house. Our adopted kids are as important as our blood if not even more when they’re the only ones that are raised in our family.”

Sienna’s heart clenched at the underground way their society worked. Deep down, she still thought herself to be a Ryder and wasn’t sure how she felt about becoming a Lockwood. Everything went so fast, and because of the Remingtons, she didn’t have the time to adjust to the idea. She didn’t even talk to her real family yet.

“Any word on the Remingtons?” Aiden asked his father, but it was Xavier who answered.

“They’re keeping low. We hacked their systems but couldn’t find anything out of the ordinary,” Xavier said, then sighed in defeat. “To be honest, we’ve no idea what they’re up to.”

“Right now, all we can do is focus on our mission,” Sienna told him, wanting to cheer him up. “I’m sure if something will be happening, there’ll be new signs for you to notice.”

Xavier gave her a grateful smile. Sienna’s lips turned up as well, but she struggled not to furrow her brows. Xavier looked more disheveled than usual, and his hair was sticking in every direction. Even his Carrington clan uniform seemed all wrong. The knot on the tie wasn’t done properly, and the suit was full of wrinkles. Xavier’s brown eyes appeared darker than usual, accompanied by the same hollowed bags underneath them that made Sienna wonder when had been the last time that he had gotten a good night’s sleep. The usually detail-oriented Carrington heir was missing all the spots that his job wanted him to hit.

“That’s all for now,” Mr. Carington said, getting up. “Sienna, you should go to your room and see if Adrianna’s packed your bag. I’d also advise you to get some sleep while you can.”

“I second that. You’ll definitely need it,” Jaxon chuckled and winked.

Sienna kept back an annoyed groan at all the male energy bossing her around. When they were coming home, she thought she wouldn’t need to leave for a few days at least. The reality was worse. Not wanting to lose any of the precious hours at home, Sienna got up, said quick goodbyes, and went to her room where Adrianna waited for her with much juicer gossip about their favorite heirs.

CHAPTER 9

AdriannawasloungingonSienna’s bed, reading a magazine when Sienna entered her room. Her bags were stacked in one corner of the room, ready for her departure. Her friend worked fast and for once Sienna was grateful because that meant there’d be no unnecessary interruptions during their chat.

Adrianna’s head jerked up when she saw Sienna, but she didn’t stand up at attention. Instead, she remained on the bed, completely unbothered by getting caught.

Sienna raised her brow and smiled. “If that’s how your work looks, I want your job too.”

Adrianna rolled her eyes. “Only if you’re willing to spend hours preparing outfits for every imaginary situation. You can take me at my word that since you’re going with Jaxon, there are too many possibilities to pack for.”

“I’m sure you did well,” Sienna said encouragingly, then grimaced as she saw there were seven bags. “Will I really need that much?”

“You’re going to New York City. With Jaxon,” her friend pointed out.

“I know, but we won’t stay long, will we?”

“Only until the mission is done.”

Sienna sighed and joined her friend on her bed. Adrianna closed the magazine and sat straighter, giving Sienna her full attention.

“What’s on your mind?” Adrianna asked her.

Sienna shrugged. “Nothing.”

“You know you can talk to me, right?”

Sienna nodded.

“Then talk to me.”

Sienna took a deep breath, unsure of how to put into words everything that happened and the feelings she was avoiding.

“I had sex with Aiden…” she started, trailing off.

“That’s nothing new,” Adrianna said and only half-rolled her eyes.

“But it was different,” Sienna insisted, gaining courage. Her friend remained quiet as she searched for words. “It was more sensual, more intense, more loving, more everything. Does that make sense?”

“It makes sense that the sex gets better as you get to know the person and develop a certain level of trust with them. It also helps that you get to know each other’s likes and wants. He knows what makes you tick, and you know how to turn his tock,” Adrianna teased.
