“It was like kissing a sibling,” she said at last.

“It was weird,” he agreed. “As if alone, we don’t have any chemistry, but that foursome was so hot.”

“I know, right?”

With her ear on his chest, she could tell the beat of his heart sped up, but he didn’t say anything. After a moment of waiting, she decided to ask him herself. “What’s on your mind?”

“We’ll still be friends? Even if we don’t have sex?” he asked with a quiet voice as if he was afraid to hear the answer.

Sienna pushed herself up so she could look him in the eyes and put her hands on his chest for balance.

“Of course. Always. Don’t forget that we were friends first and we’ll be friends forever,” she promised him. “Besides, you don’t know that we won’t have sex. I told you before that I’d be down for another study session.”

Xavier chuckled, the sound lighter than before. He grabbed her head and pulled her closer to plant a kiss on her cheek.

“I’m so glad to have you in my life, Sienna,” he told her. “I’d do anything for you.”

“Me too,” she replied, surprising herself by meaning it and hugged him fiercely.

There was no excitement in Xavier’s arms, just safety. Sometimes that was enough, but only for a little bit. Her body craved more of everything, but most of all passion. That was something Xavier could never give her.

One Carrington heir down, but there were still three left that were messing with her head. If only she could find a way to have them all.

CHAPTER 20

Withthepreparationsdoneand the tour finished, it was time to bring the war to the Remingtons’ doorstep.

The Lockwoods had temporarily moved into the house with their escort. People buzzed around, running from post to post, carrying on with their business. A flutter of activity was dizzying, but at the same time got Sienna’s adrenaline going.

It was the beginning of the end.

Adrianna cried out in delight when she saw Sienna walk into the room. Sienna returned her friend’s hug, allowing herself to smile with relief for finally being done with the tour. The rest of the war would be played out from the safety of her home, planning moves from the war room that her little soldiers would carry out.

“It’s so good to see you,” Adrianna told her just as happy to have her back as Sienna was to be back. “It’s been so boring without you here. The heirs who stay behind just mope around, looking miserable and snapping at everyone. It’s like someone took away their favorite toy.”

Sienna rolled her eyes but couldn’t hide her smile. “You don’t need to exaggerate, Ade.”

“I’m not exaggerating! Jensen’s been even moodier than he usually is, Aiden only left the gym when he had to, and Jaxon spent his time locked up in his room listening to horrible music about teenage heartbreaks.”

Sienna couldn’t help but laugh at the picture that Adrianna had painted of her Carrington heirs. Adrianna ushered her to sit down on the sofa next to her, her face turning into a frown.

“Remember our last conversation?” her friend asked her, keeping her voice quiet.

Sienna’s thoughts turned to Adrianna’s warning about her little brother and nodded. “Did anything happen?”

“I’m not exactly sure what’s going on, but maybe he isn’t such a lost cause as I thought.”

Sienna’s face softened as her lips turned up into a small, relieved smile. “You have no idea how glad I am to hear that. He’s my brother. I don’t want him to be my enemy too.”

“You’ll need to be careful though,” Adrianna warned. “It’s still too soon to tell and it’s better not to let your guard down.”

Sienna nodded in agreement. “What happened? Tell me everything.”

“I’ve tried to spend as much time with him as I could without making it look inappropriate. I told you that he took a liking to me and is trying out his flirting skills, which need a lot of work by the way,” Adrianna said, smiling fondly at the memory.

Sienna realized her friend might like her brother more than she cared to admit. Maybe she didn’t dare to admit it even to herself.

“We went for walks and had occasional meals together. He’s a bright boy, but also quite spoiled,” Adrianna said with a slight grimace. “He’s very angry for not being the heir anymore and I tried to make him see that you’re a good person and that you don’t care about the Lockwood fortune.”
