“The showers are that way, and the toilets are right next to it,” he told her, pointing in the direction he was speaking of.

“There are showers and toilets here?” Sienna asked, her eyes widening.

Xavier frowned. “Of course, what else did you expect?”

She shook her head, too embarrassed to admit the truth. Xavier’s mouth quirked up as he tilted his head to look at her with amusement in his eyes.

“Did you think we’d be in some sort of wilderness?”

Sienna buried her face in her palms and shrugged. Xavier laughed, the sound travelling to the nearby tents. He took Sienna’s hands in his, forcing her to look at him. His brown eyes were warm and kind.

“How about we eat something, and then you can get ready for bed?”

Sienna nodded, unable to ignore the rumbling of her stomach. She was eager to be done with everything and on her way home.

Predictably, Brian prepared fish, but instead of catching it himself, he bought it off one of the other campers. Sienna never developed a taste for it, but they didn’t have other food, so she made herself stomach it enough to satisfy her hunger.

Once she was ready for bed, she climbed into the tent and waited for Xavier to join her. The air mattress wasn’t the most comfortable, but it was better than sleeping on the cold ground. The zipper opened, revealing Xavier’s smiling face. The mattress shifted under his weight as air traveled around, causing Sienna to wobble rather awkwardly.

“I wish we wouldn’t need to go so soon,” Xavier said, sounding wistful. He propped himself on his elbow, his hand supporting his head as he lied on his side, looking at her.

“I can’t wait to be home again.”

“I get that. You’ve been around more than any of us, and it must be taking its toll on you, but it’s just so peaceful here, isn’t it?”

“Too peaceful if you ask me,” she complained.

Xavier’s eyes narrowed, giving her a feeling as if he was seeing into her soul. Goosebumps traveled up Sienna’s arms, and she had to rub away the chill.

“Stop that,” she ordered, not liking the way he was looking at her.

“What are you afraid of?”

Sienna’s mouth dried up as her mind pushed forward all her fears, but she’d rather die than give them a voice.

“Nothing,” she told him with a firm voice, then purposefully turned her back to him. “I’m tired. Goodnight.”

Sienna could feel Xavier’s eyes drilling a hole in her back, the sensation making her nervous. She was about to tell him off when he spoke up so quietly that she barely heard him over her thundering heart.

“Do you remember our study session?”

Instead of replying, she turned around to look him in the eyes. He had bags underneath, but the brown color was as radiant as ever, and she couldn’t help herself but to reach up and touch his cheek, trailing a finger down his freshly shaved jaw.

“I think about it quite often,” she admitted, unsure where the conversation was going.

Xavier swallowed, then wetted his lips. “We never tried to study alone.”

Tingling sensation started between Sienna’s thighs, her panties getting moist. Her body was awakening with arousal, and she craved to be touched. Xavier’s eyes turned heavy-lidded as they moved appreciatively over her body, and she became keenly aware of how her short nightgown clung to her shape.

Sienna’s heart sped up as Xavier leaned forward, brushing his lips over hers in a feather-like kiss. He pulled away only a little bit, still staying so near that she could feel the warmth of his breath fanning over her lips.

They gazed at each other with unreadable looks in their eyes until Sienna cleared her throat unsteadily. The moment faded, and she sighed, wrapping her arms around herself. Xavier quirked his eyebrow.

“Did you feel it too?” he asked in a whisper.

“Yes?” Sienna’s reply came out sounding more like a question than an answer.

She forced herself to look him in the eyes, finally being able to read amusement in them. Full of relief, she burst out laughing with Xavier joining in. When the sound of their laughter died down, Sienna rested her head on Xavier’s strong chest, letting him wrap his arms around her in a protective embrace.
