After a rapid examination, Sienna exhaled in relief when she saw that the Berti sisters seemed to be okay. She looked around, trying to find a safe place for them to hide, but there was none. Fighting was going on everywhere, and the warehouse was slowly being consumed by fire. Sienna wasn’t sure she had the energy to stand up and walk out herself, much less half-carrying another person.

She looked around for help, but the room was in too much chaos for anyone to notice her. On the other side, Tina cowered behind a chair of her own, seemingly unharmed. The blast saved her from certain execution. Lyle, Brian, and Kyle were nowhere to be seen. She sent a silent prayer that they were one of those many bodies covered with the fallen debris, but even she didn’t think she was that lucky.

The high-pitched ringing didn’t go away, but her mind cleared enough for her to be able to connect little details. She recognized the attackers’ clothes. They were a part of the Carrington clan. Sienna could’ve wept with joy, but she pushed the tears back because she was far from safe. The situation was still dire as the gunfight still raged. If she and her companions weren’t careful, they could’ve gotten hit by a stray bullet.

Lying on the floor, behind a makeshift cover made from fallen chairs and dead people, Sienna, Arlene, and Elisabet waited for the fighting to be over. She wasn’t aware when it finished and only realized it when Elisabet nudged her to get her attention.

Sienna pushed herself up as much as she could and looked around. It was Jensen who noticed her first. His dark blue eyes glistened with unshed tears, the relief in them clear. He dropped his gun, not caring if it got damaged, then jumped over the broken debris, making his way to where she was. His mouth opened, and the vein on his throat enlarged as he yelled something.

Aiden, Jaxon, and Xavier came running from other sides, all of them digging their way to her. Seeing her Carrington heirs, Sienna let out an easy breath, knowing for sure that the nightmare was over, and she was safe. They wouldn’t let anything bad happen to her.

Jensen reached her and gently pulled her up into his strong arms. She pressed her cheek against his hard chest, and even though she couldn’t hear his heartbeat, her heart matched the pace of his breaths. He shook her, and some part of her brain told her that he was asking her something, but she couldn’t piece it together.

The safer she was, the lower levels of adrenaline pumped through her veins. Her injuries started to catch up, and the pain further incapacitated her mind. Her eyelids drooped with heaviness, but she still managed to meet Jensen’s eyes and curled her lips up in a small smile.

The dark blue of his eyes was the last thing she could remember as she let herself be pulled into the darkness, drowning her whole.

Faintly, she was aware of other hands grabbing her body and shaking her, but she was too tired to react. Her body and her mind were exhausted. If she could have just a few minutes of rest, she would give them all the attention they deserved. But in a little bit…

CHAPTER 27

ThefirstthingSiennawas aware of was the pain. It was as if her whole body was on fire, but not the raging fire, but more like slowly shimmering coals that sent out constant heat with an occasional spark. The high-pitched ringing in her ears subsided, but it was still overwhelming. Her eyelids were heavy, and she had to put all her willpower into opening her eyes, then blinking as they adjusted to the dim light.

“She’s awake!”

A flutter of movement around her, too fast for her fatigued brain to take it all in. She heard voices but couldn’t concentrate on what they were saying. When she took in the familiar worried but handsome faces, her vision blurred again but only temporarily as her tears started trailing a path down her cheek. She was home.

“Sienna,” Jensen called her name, leaning forward and caressing her cheek with his gentle fingers. “Are you okay?” he asked when she looked at him.

Her brows furrowed as more tears spilled out of her eyes as if the dam was broken and there was no fixing it.

“You’re safe now,” Aiden said, and she turned her head to the side to look at him. His grey eyes offered her as much comfort as the soothing way he rubbed his thumb across her palm.

“What happened?” she forced out, her voice hoarse as the sound fought through the pain in her throat.

The heirs exchanged glances, one seeming more uncomfortable than the other. It took Sienna some time to recover enough to come to a conclusion that they had bad news.

As the eldest heir of the Carrington clan, Jensen took the initiative to fill her in. He looked as if he hadn’t slept in days, but so did the other heirs.

“Things aren’t ideal,” Jensen started, then cleared his throat. “Well, I suppose I’ll start with the good news first.”

The other heirs nodded their agreements, but they were too quick to do it, which meant that the bad news was really bad. Sienna wanted to hear that one first, but she was afraid that then she couldn’t focus on the good and she needed to hear something positive right now. She was also too tired to insist otherwise.

“Elisabet and Arlene are safe and sound,” Jensen told her with a small smile, and she remembered that Arlene had been shot in the leg. “They’re keeping them in the hospital under observation for a few days, but they will both make a full recovery.”

“Physical at least. No one knows how the whole thing truly fucked them up,” Jaxon commented from the side of the room, earning himself an elbow in the ribs by Xavier.

Jensen narrowed his eyes at him, then turned back to Sienna with a softer expression. He squeezed her hand, then continued, “The old Remington’s dead. He was shot in the heart.”

Sienna nodded, the small movement painfully reminding her that her whole body ached. “Tina shot him,” she forced the words out, her throat still hurting.

Jensen’s brows furrowed as he looked at Aiden. “She was telling the truth,” he said more to himself than anyone else, then specifically addressed Aiden, “Make sure she’s being well taken care of.”

Aiden nodded, pulled out his phone, typed a message, then put it back in his pocket again before turning his attention back to Sienna as did Jensen.

“Tina’s one of our prison-guests,” Jensen explained, then grimaced and added before she could object, “We’re upgrading her to a guest status.”

Sienna’s lips twitched, but she was too tired to smile. The relief and happiness upon hearing that the Berti sisters and Tina were alive was indescribable, but she reminded herself that there was more.
