Sienna accepted it gratefully. With slow and careful movements, she brought it to her lips, taking small bites. Adrianna’s eyes didn’t leave her face.

“I’m so glad you’re okay,” Adrianna said at last, exhaling in relief. “I’m sorry for betraying you. I know it saved your life, but I feel so bad for doing it after you promised me to keep it a secret.”

Sienna’s brows furrowed, giving her friend a quizzical look. “What are you talking about?”

Adrianna shook her head, then slapped her forehead with the palm of her hand. “You made me promise not to let Jensen know that I knew about his note, but after I met him in the corridor long after you’ve gone, I started yelling at him for standing you up. I called him all sort of names that I’d rather not repeat, and I broke your confidence. I’m so sorry for betraying your trust.”

“It was you,” Sienna breathed, connecting the dots. “You saved my life.”

“But I still betrayed you,” Adrianna said with a sad tone.

“That doesn’t matter,” Sienna assured her. “And if you want my forgiveness, you have it. You have that and my gratefulness too. Now tell me what happened after you yelled at Jensen?”

Adrianna shrugged. “I don’t know. It was a mess. He asked me what the fuck I was talking about, then grabbed my arms and shook me, insisting that I show him the note. It took a bit convincing because I didn’t think he deserved to get a second chance, but there was something in his eyes that I haven’t seen before. Jensen was afraid, and that was what convinced me to give him the note.”

“You did well.”

“I know that now, but I still felt bad. Anyway, they called Jack Thorne who accessed the satellites and followed Brian’s car to the warehouse. As soon as they had the location, they were on their way. It felt like forever before they brought you back and you looked so broken,” Adrianna said, her voice breaking. She wiped her nose with her sleeve which was so unlike her and further showed Sienna how distressed she was. “They didn’t want to put you in the hospital because of the last time when you were almost kidnapped. Instead, they got the best doctors here along with their equipment. You only have a few scratches and bruises. I think that they said the worst part is your concussion, which is why they didn’t want you to be alone until you woke up.”

Sienna’s eyes widened at Adrianna’s breaking down of the events. A lot had happened, and in the end, if her friend didn’t care about her enough to insult the eldest Carrington heir, they would never find her.

“Thank you,” Sienna breathed, grabbing Adrianna’s hand, and squeezing it. “I’ll never forget what you did for me. I told you this before and I’m going to say it again, you’ll always have a place with me as a part of my family. Think about it.”

Adrianna nodded and sniffled, a very unladylike sound, then threw her arms around her as gently as she could. Sienna leaned into the embrace, into its warmth and protectiveness.

“You should get some sleep,” Adrianna said, then took the tray away before handing her the pill. “It’s not strong, but it’ll help you relax enough to get a few hours of rest.”

Sienna took it from her without hesitation, completely trusting her friend. Adrianna settled on the bed next to her and put her arm around Sienna. Her heartbeat slowed as her breathing turned deep and calm. Before she realized what was happening, Sienna drifted off to sleep.

CHAPTER 28

WhenSiennawokeup,Adriannawas still by her side, reading a book. She shifted into a more comfortable position, causing her friend to notice that she was awake. Adrianna put down the book and smiled.

“Good morning, sleepyhead,” Adrianna cooed. “You slept all night long without moving a muscle. More than once I had to check if you were breathing. I seriously thought you died in your sleep.”

Sienna rolled her eyes and smiled. “You’re such a drama queen.”

Adrianna grinned, then turned serious. “How do you feel?”

Sienna contemplated the question, trying to get a feel of her body. It hurt a lot less than the day before, which only showed how healing the sleep could be. The high-pitched ringing in her ear was at its minimum and her headache almost gone. Her body was sore, but other than that she felt okay.

“I think I’ll live,” she replied, then with Adrianna’s help, slowly pushed herself out of bed.

“I was told not to wake you, but now that you’re awake and you feel up to it, you can attend the meeting in the war room in half an hour. I can have your breakfast brought there if you want,” Adrianna told her, helping her to the bathroom.

“Yes to the meeting, but no to breakfast. I don’t feel like eating right now, but I promise to let you know when I do,” Sienna added when Adrianna wanted to object.

Her friend nodded in agreement, then left to prepare the outfit while Sienna took a shower. The hot water running down her body soothed her bruised and sore muscles, its caress feeling like a summer kiss. Sienna didn’t want it to end but didn’t have it in her to object when Adrianna entered the bathroom, reminding her that she’d be late for the meeting if she didn’t finish getting ready.

Adrianna took care of everything, applying enough makeup to cover her paleness, making her look healthier than she felt. Her friend insisted on taking her to the war room in a wheelchair and despite Sienna giving it her best as she protested against it, she lost and had to give in to Adrianna’s demands.

Everyone was already gathered in the war room when Adrianna wheeled her in. Their eyes fell on hers and Sienna rolled her eyes, dismissing them with a shrug and a smile. Adrianna didn’t care about the loud noise the chair made when she dragged it away from the table to fit her wheelchair. Once she was done, she went to the door, but only to turn around again to remind Sienna to text her if she wanted to eat. Sienna’s cheeks blushed but couldn’t deny how touched she was at how much her friend cared about her. She made a mental note to try harder to convince her to join her family.

“How do you feel?” her mother asked her as soon as Adrianna was gone, speaking up in front of everyone for the first time.

Sienna met her kind eyes and forced her lips into a smile. “Better than yesterday. I’m a little banged up but not as bad to need the wheelchair. Adrianna’s just overreacting.”

“One day of taking it easy won’t kill you,” Jensen told her, making it clear that he approved of Adrianna babying her.
