“You need to calm the fuck down and stop talking to me reckless. Also, I sincerely hope and pray that when Brook starts to work for the hospital, she meets a doctor that is not a fucking coward and who will claim her, marry her, and make her happy! And I hope the shit is done right in your face! Fucking coward!”

“What kind of shit is that to say to your brother?”

“It’s real, that’s what!”

“I wish a mother fucker would try to say something to her.”

“So, you’re selfish, a liar, and a coward! You’re a friend, remember, so when she finds her guy, you better support her and shut the fuck up because you have had more than enough time to have her. So, if you’re not going to shit, get off the fucking pot! Get out of the way for someone who doesn’t have your hang-ups.”

“And I’ll kill his ass!”

“For what!” I interrupt. “For doing something you can’t or won’t?”

“You don’t understand.”

“And I will never understand the selfish shit you are doing to her, but you know what? That just proves you don’t love her. You’re right, y’all have to be just friends because a man in love would never treat a woman he loves as poorly as you treat Brooklyn.”

“Who do you think you are, huh? A relationship guru? You don’t even have a woman, but you got the nerve to stand there and try to give out advice? Get you a woman before you try to lecture me about mine!”

“But she’s not yours, remember, she’s just a friend,” by this point, we are damn near yelling at each other chest to chest breathing hard.

“Jaasiel?” I hear Parker’s voice making me break the staring contest to look at her. She tentatively reaches out to me, and I pull her to me.

“What are you two out here getting ready to fight about?” Josh asks.

“Nothing,” we say at the same time.

“Well, that’s obviously a lie. Whatever it is, you two table that shit! We are here to celebrate Brooklyn’s hard work.” He grits out between clenched teeth. “You two are out here acting like fucking toddlers. And who are you?” he directs his attention to Parker, prompting me to finally focus on something other than my brother’s selfish ass. The way he is treating Brooklyn legit makes me want to beat his ass.

“Parker,” I snap at Josh.

“Jaasiel,” she admonishes me softly.

“You can back that shit all the way down with me,” Josh says, looking at me like I have lost my mind. “Hello, Parker, I’m Josh, these jackasses’ oldest brother, and this is my wife, Savvy.”

“Savannah,” Savvy says, making me raise my eyebrows at her correction.

“Savannah,” Parker says in reply.

“How long have you been with Jaasiel?” Savvy asks.

“Only a little while.”

“Hmm, it must be some short time if he brought you to a family event,” Savvy says, looking at me, not Parker. And as if things couldn’t get worse, True, Joyce, Carla, and Megan come to stand with Savvy, and they are all swinging their gazes back and forth between Parker and me.

“I wouldn’t dare speak for Jaasiel, but I will say for me, it has been an amazing short time. He is an amazing, generous, patient, and kind man; if I can only hope I give him back what he gives me,” she says, looking up at me with a small knowing smile. “I did try to tell him that it wasn’t a smart thing to just throw me in the fray like this, but he insisted. Since you are married to a Gideon, I am sure you are aware that once a Gideon man makes up his mind, there is no changing it,” she says, being the smooth talker I knew her to be.

“Oh, there is a way to change it, but usually, it takes hours,” Joyce says.

“Or days,” Megan says.

“Some very enjoyable and pleasurable hours and days,” Carla says.

“And the gifts,” True says as she pulls a hairpin knife from her top bun showing off the beautiful custom-made knife my brother had made for her. “They usually come with the mind change.”

“Oh! Is that how it’s done?” she says with a smirk and her eyebrows lifted on her forehead.

“That is definitely how it is done,” Lennox says.
