“You don’t know what it does to men like us when we face every fucking day knowing that anything could happen to the ones we love just because they’re associated with us.” He ran his hand through the hair at the top of his head. “When shit’s good, we forget for a little while.”

“And then shit happens.” It didn’t require a response, but I saw the corner of his mouth curl up. “What about your brothers? The ones with women and families? What did they do to get over their fears of having the lives they deserve?”

He turned to me then and just stared at me for what seemed a long time. “They went through a lot before they caved,” he admitted reluctantly. “It guts me to know that I failed to keep you safe. That monsters like Monk and Bronx had you in their fucking hands. They would have—” He cut himself short and sucked in a deep breath. “I don’t want anything to happen to you, babe.”

“Nothing will.”

“Something did.”

“And you saved me,” I pointed out forcefully. I went to him and cupped his cheek. “There are no guarantees in life, honey. Bad things happen that are out of our control. I don’t want anything to happen to me either, but more than anything else, I don’t want anything to happen tous.”I lifted enough so I could reach his mouth and cover his with mine, just for a second. “I’m not going to let you push me away, Liam,” I mouthed stubbornly against his warm lips. “I mean it. I’ll fight you every step of the way. I want a life with you. I want your babies. I can handle the good and the bad if I know I have you in the end.” My eyes swelled with unshed tears.

“Babe...” His voice was hoarse with emotion.

“Yes, honey?”

“Kiss me again.”

Chapter 31

Doc

I sat back in my chair and slowly sipped my coffee, observing my brothers over the rim of my cup as they discussed doing renovations at Grinders. I wasn’t interested in that shit, preferring instead to think about the woman I had waiting for me out in the bar. Today was the day, only she didn’t know it. As soon as church was over I was taking her sweet ass to Sunrise Heights and officially claiming her. So, here I sat, with a boner, visualizing how I was going to take her over my bike later.

I would have taken her there before now, but I’d wanted to give her ribs time to heal, because I planned to pound the life out of her little pussy—or, better yet, pound the life into her—when I claimed her, giving her that baby we both wanted. I snorted, forgetting where I was. I hadn’t fucked Harlow since her ordeal with Bronx, but we’d fooled around enough to take the edge off our urges. She’d gotten pretty good at blow jobs, but today I was going to go nut deep inside her.

In the two weeks since her rescue I’d moved her in to my house. Things were moving fast, but we both knew what we wanted and saw no reason to put off the inevitable. It hadn’t taken her long to make my home into our home, and I was happy with the results of the shopping spree she’d taken with some of the other old ladies. Harlow had good taste, and for the most part I agreed with her choices.

“So, raise your hand if you’re in agreement.”

I set my cup down and raised my hand along with everyone else, chancing a glance at Demon. I had no idea what I was voting on. His knowing smirk revealed that he hadn’t missed anything and knew that my head wasn’t in the game today, especially when it came to remodeling the club-owned bar. The important shit had been covered at the beginning of church, and because of the recent trouble we’d had in New Mexico and at home, more than just the officers were in the room.

Apparently, the authorities in New Mexico were looking into the take down of Wild Bandits, but not very enthusiastically. Word had gotten back to us that they’d been wanting to run the MC out of their area for some time now because they’d been getting out of hand and weren’t meeting their obligations. In other words, they weren’t paying up. It costs a lot of money to keep the law in your pocket.

So we’d done the town and cops of Westcliffe a big fucking favor.

It was always nice when we didn’t have to worry that the fucking cops would come knocking at our door after a serious fight like the one that had gone down at Wild Bandits’ clubhouse.
