“Hell no. Let’s just say that I was impressed by his size, but he lacked mobility.”

“The fuck?”

She giggles hard.

“Enough about my lack of sex life. I’m working on it, and I’m motivated now that you’ve put me back into my place. Been thinking about joining this little club over here. It’s kind of like North Carolina’s Club Prestige.”

“That’s a viable resolution to your problem.”

“It surely is. Now, back to you, lover boy. Now that you’ve worked out your aggression on my body and know what I think of you and your pissant pity party let’s get some ice cream.”

She scoots to the edge of the bed, and I smack her ass, and she gleefully hops up, squealing and running from the room toward the kitchen.

I run after her as a plan for my return home starts to formulate.

28 – YESENIA

MID-JULY

I count the months since I last saw Kincaid, kissed Kincaid, and felt him inside of me. I had a choice to make. Going with my heart and taking a chance on Kincaid. Or. Staying with my husband, the one with whom I’d built a life and was a sure thing.

Kincaid called and texted after our night at the Wentworth, trying to make plans again. I ignored his calls and text messages. I promised myself I would give my husband a fair chance, not one riddled with memories of my short, sweet time with Kincaid.

Yet, every day I realize that I made a mistake. I wonder where Cade is and what he’s doing. God, what I wouldn’t give to be wherever he is because I feel free only with him. Only with him do I not feel the pressure my mother and stepfather place on me to be who they want me to be. Nicky is a constant reminder of that pressure and those expectations.

I stare out onto the sidewalk below and watch a young, harried-looking mother pushing her baby in a carriage while holding her toddler’s hand. A smirking teenage boy and a giggling girl holding hands pass the young mother. Further down and across the street at a park are a small group of boys playing football.

My eyes flicker across the street to a man who pops open the back door of his SUV and grabs grocery bags while a pregnant woman steps out of the passenger side. He lends his arm to her when he finishes, and together, they climb the steps of their walkup.

I sigh softly, resting my chin on top of my arms. A tendril of hair escapes my ponytail as a gentle breeze blows. The first of its kind, it gives me a sweet reprieve from the heat of the midsummer day.

I hear the balcony door slide open behind me, but I don’t bother to turn around.

“Hey,” he says softly.

“Hi, Nicky.”
