“And I yours,” he replies.

In a long, heartbreaking kiss, we say goodbye to each other for the final time.

6WEEKS LATER

“How are you feeling?” Mother asks as we sit at her favorite restaurant in downtown Charlotte, Chase’s Brunch Place.

This is her first time seeing me in almost a month. When I returned from visiting Claire, Mom and Poppy were in Milan for a fashion show, and they’d gone from there on a two-week cruise to the Bahamas.

“I’m wonderful, Mom.”

Mom lifts the teapot and pours some into my cup before pouring her own.

“You know your Dad looks forward to your return.”

Rather than taking over Dad’s position in July, I’d told him I needed a few more months. Now I’m down to one week before I take over.

“I know, Mom. I look forward to being back. I have a lot of new ideas for expansion and growth,” I share.

Her eyes narrow at me. Turning my gaze from hers, I cut into my pork chop.

“What, Mom?” I ask, not bothering to look up at her.

“That’s what I want to know.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I say, chewing around my porkchop.

She sighs and shakes her head. “You’re broken, Cade.”

Bristling, I reply, “I’m not broken, Mom.”

“Yes, you are. I think that girl toyed with your feelings, especially after all you’d done for her.”

“No one toyed with my feelings. Besides, I hadn’t done anything for her.”
