“When I come this time...no warning. All guns.”

33 – KINCAID

14MONTHS LATER

Our ceremony was in Alta, Utah where we first met. It was quiet and small. Well, small for a Maxwell wedding.

We chose the chalet that we met in to hold the wedding. Much like my cousin Kostas’s wedding, our wedding is in December, with Christmas still a couple of weeks away.

Our wedding guests consisted of both sets of parents, Nia’s dad’s new girlfriend, Nia’s stepfather, our siblings, Kostas and Malaya, Champion and her boyfriend, Merrick, Nia’s best friend, Chloe and her boyfriend, and Tyler and Denise who recently became engaged. I thought it would be awkward for Stacey and Shep, but they seem to be bonded at the hip for now, choosing to leave any other lovers behind.

I was surprised when Nia asked if Champion would do her makeup. Champ was honored to be asked. I didn’t think they got along well for some reason, but they’ve both shown me that I was wrong.

Only Lauren and Andrew are missing. He and I are still trying to work on our friendship.

Andrew and Lauren got counseling and are working on their marriage, and from what I’ve heard, a family. Lauren’s four months pregnant and seems to finally be excited about it.

It may take some time before he fully trusts me around Lauren again, but he doesn’t have to worry about that. I’ve long since gotten over my feelings for her. The only woman that matters is the one I cherish, Yesenia Abril Lupe Carver-Maxwell.

Yesenia has heard from Nicky once since he left. Our engagement was placed in the society pages, thanks to the collaboration of our mothers, and somehow reached him all the way in Rio. He called to congratulate her and to text her a picture of his baby boy.

When she congratulated him, I could see there was not a bit of jealousy in my woman. She was genuinely happy for him.

I look at her now in the soft moonlight as she rests in my arms. She turns over and smiles up at me, kissing me.

“What’s that for?” I ask.

“Your patience. Your love. Your understanding.”

I kiss her back and pull her close to me. Slowly, I pull away and trickle soft kisses over her closed eyes.

“What was that for?” she asks.

“Your forgiveness. I didn’t treat you the best during that time.”

“Men aren’t good with hiding their pain. They struggle to cover their hurt when a woman has done them wrong.”
