“Why didn’t you bring a girlfriend or a hookup on the trip with you?”

I pull my hand down my face and smile.

“I was wondering when you’d get to that.”

“What?”

“Personal questions. You seem to be closed off a bit.”

“Am not. Just not nosy.”

“That’s fair. Okay, I didn’t bring a girlfriend, date, or hookup because the woman I was dating recently relocated to London. She had a career opportunity that opened almost out of the blue, and she couldn’t pass it up. I had no time to find someone else on such short notice.”

“Do you miss her?”

Shrugging, I say, “Most of the time, no, because we were both always working.”

“And the times that you do?”

I blow out a loud breath. “Those times are few and far between. I’d have to say it has only happened since I’ve been here. Watching my friends and brothers in marriage, dating, or an open relationship can be hard sometimes, but I know I’ll be fine.”

“Do you call her?”

“I’m too busy—”

“No, since you’ve been here and haven’t been busy.”

“No, because what would that serve? I’d probably be even lonelier if I were to do that.”

“Okay, can we make a deal?” she asks, extending the pinky finger on her right hand.

“I’m a reasonable businessman. Let’s see what you’re suggesting.”

“Whenever you get lonely on this trip, and you need some company come and seek me out.”

“Yeah?”

“Absolutely. That way, I can get on your nerves so badly that you’ll wish to be alone again.”

Laughing, I say, “I doubt that you could. You make a great companion, though.”

“I do. Don’t I?” she asks charmingly.

I smirk at her. “What do you do for a living? Are you an actress?”

Her face scrunches up. “What would give you that impression?”

“You do a great job of deflecting, and you have the ability to hide in plain sight. Somehow you can distract the attention coming your way to someone else.”

“What is it that you want to know? I’m an open book,” she shrugs.

I don’t think that’s true, but I’ll test my theory.

“What do you do for a living?”

“I’m the director of a foundation founded by my maternal grandparents.”

“What does your foundation do?”
