“We invest socially in the Hispanic communities in South Carolina by expanding opportunities through grants that fund education, arts and culture, health, human services, and community development programs. For instance, our foundation provided computers for every child in lower-income schools and paid for annual memberships to museums, zoos, and things of that nature.

“We’ve funded college tuition, provided funds for an applicant to open an art gallery, funded the opening of a health clinic in one community where the residents were traveling fifteen miles for health services before. We’ve funded new neighborhoods being built and the houses in those neighborhoods. These opportunities weren’t available for most applicants because of racial discrimination or lack of knowledge on where to go to get the resources they needed to make their dreams come true. My great-grandparents worked hard to come to America from Mexico to give my grandmother and her siblings real opportunities.

“The platform they built allowed my grandmother and her siblings to attend college and get great jobs. From there, she met my grandfather, who was already in the copper and mining industry. Together, they builtMinería Mexico, a mining and copper company back home.”

“Your work sounds rewarding,” I say after she finishes passionately speaking.

She smiles softly. “It is.”

“What do you do in your free time?”

She averts her eyes before she says, “Reading.” The yawn and stretch that follows as she stands up let me know she doesn’t want to open up further. As I suspected, she’s not an open book. She’ll allow me entrance to only so many pages, and once I complete the first several pages, she’s closed the book on me.

“Good night, Cade.”

“Good night,” I grumble.

Damn, I didn’t even get to finish the first chapter. She’s got me hungry for more.

6 – YESENIA

We spent the entiremorning and part of the early afternoon skiing again before heading out to tour a nearby mining museum after they found out about my love for mining, thanks to my paternal grandfather’s legacy. We closed out the evening at a bar performing karaoke. Now I’m bone tired, but it’s been a good day.

Everyone was chilling in the living room, getting high, but I skipped out when I saw Shep pull out his little bag. I’ve wanted to check out the sauna, which I’ve avoided because the other couples have spent so much time there.

I heard Lauren shouting at the others earlier to stay out until the cleaning lady could clean it. When we were heading out for karaoke, I saw her arrive, and no one’s been in since.

After closing the door behind me, I look at the thermostat and lower the temperature to one-hundred-sixty-five degrees. I place a towel on the bench, sit down, and close my eyes.

My thoughts return to a phone call I received this morning from my dad before we left to go skiing.

“HEY, DADDY.”

“Hey, my sweet girl. Heard you left town for some much-needed R&R.”
