I pause at the doorway of Saint’s office.

“What’d you tell her to get this information so easily and quickly?”

He smirks at me and says, “That’s my secret.”

I shake my head.

“Where are you heading to now?”

“Looks like I need to pay Cutter a visit,” I say, translating the name from Spanish to English.

After turning overthe information I had to King and discussing my plans, he called Church this morning. There’s a low hum of activity as half the room tries to guess what’s on the agenda, mixed with the soft snores and grumbles of those who aren’t happy about waking up so early in the morning.

As prospects and members continue to fill the room, my mind roams back to thoughts of the nurse avoiding me. I wish there were a way to make her feel safe, to let her know that I mean no harm. Simone.

I like the name. Funnily enough, I like the woman, although I shouldn’t.

Alternatively, I wonder what the hell her freak-out was all about.

Saint gives me a faint nod as he slips into a chair near Hurricane. The information he’s given me has been burning a hole in my pocket. While King doesn’t want me to move without his permission, I couldn’t sit on my ass and not do shit. This is my brother we’re talking about. I’m sure he’d be the same damned way if it were Saint or Reaper, his brothers.

I anxiously drum my fingers on my knee, wondering what the fuck is taking everyone so long to gather. King isn’t here yet, but it’s not long before he files in with Fubar, our enforcer, at his back.

Once he’s settled in, he looks around the room before his eyes rest on me and gives me a slight nod. I nod back and sit up in my seat.

“As most of you know, Nitro’s brother, Ryan, is in the hospital following an assault. He’d been working on a case and apparently stumbled across some information someone didn’t want him to have. We don’t have all the details yet, because he’s in a drug-induced coma, but we’ve got more information than we started with.”

I hear a few grumbles as people call out for blood or ask what we will do about it.

“Aye!” King calls out with a scowl silencing everyone.

“Yesterday, the nurse covering him was assaulted when she found someone in Ryan’s room trying to finish off the job they started.”

Rumbles rise again.

“Just like I’m sure most of you can understand, and as I hear you saying, Nitro wants revenge. Because it was a cop, OPD is all over this, but Sinners get revenge for our own. Even though he’s a cop, he’s Nitro’s brother, which makes him one of our own by default. We protect the family. We’ve had some men on his room, and the prospect who was on the room yesterday and left his post is being dealt with. Moving forward, we won’t take slack where his security is concerned.”

Some mumbles of agreement take place before King goes on.

“We need to continue to protect Ryan, but Nitro is going after these bastards. I’m sure he’ll call on us to go to war with him when he goes after these bastards.”

“Who are they?” Devil asks.

“Víboras,” King announces. “Nitro has the name of the member who tried to attack his brother in the hospital yesterday. Don’t think he’s the same guy who initiated the assault because he’s a low-level drug runner in the gang. We’ll take him out and then go higher, possibly even to the head of the gang.”

The rumble of displeasure runs throughout the room as they realize the enemy is one of Oakland’s most notorious gangs. Our encounters with the gang have been few and far between since they usually stick to their side of town and don’t interfere with our business.

“Are we voting on this?” Chaos calls out.

“Like I said before, Ryan’s family. You want us to vote on whether we should protect your brood?” King snarls.

All eyes turn to Chaos as he shakes his head and slumps in his seat.

“Anybody got any issues with this? Speak up now!”

“What about the nurse? Someone’s gotta be aiming for her once they find out we know their identity,” Snake says.
