“I’ll take care of her,” I speak up as a ripple of protectiveness runs through me, and a fire flash at the thought of any of my brothers trying to protect her. I know what their brand of protectiveness can lead to, and that’s the last thing I want for her.

If it ain’t me, then nobody’s fucking touching her.

King eyes me and nods warily.

“I got it,” I reassure him.

“Let me know if you need the brothers in on this.”

I nod.

“All right. Be prepared and ready for what’s to come next. We’re assigning a couple of prospects and a couple of members to do some recon on this guy, Cutter before we come in with pipes roaring. Church dismissed,” King says.

I remain seated until the others file out. King remains in his seat, watching me.

“You got this under control?”

“I do. Soon as I can get her to speak with me again.”

“What do you mean?”

“She hates gangs and everything gang-related. We haven’t gotten along from the minute that we met. She decided to call a truce, but this attack on Ryan in the hospital reminded her that she hates me and everything related to my world.”

King smirks and slaps me on the shoulder. “Sure, you’ll work it out,” he says, walking away.

“Yeah. Got no choice.”

8 – MONI

“Do you want to transferto another ward, Simone?” Dr. Lennox asks.

I look around the walls of his large office, seeing his plaques and his wall of books.

Then my eyes drop to the picture on the shelf behind him. A picture of his first wife and three kids. His wife was killed in a drive-by, and his oldest daughter was injured but survived.

I turn my eyes to Dr. Lennox and ask, “Why do you do the job that you do, Dr. Lennox? With all the pain and suffering you see around the hospital, including the trauma you have endured. Why do you do this?”
